Report: Microsoft's Kinect Plans

The next Xbox is believed to include a newly designed Kinect motion sensor, but that might just be the start for Microsoft's plans for the device.

The Verge reports that Microsoft has a number of future uses for the peripheral, including miniaturizing it so it can be embedded into laptops, tablets, and TVs. An exact timetable wasn't given for when we can see some of these new uses, but according to the article, it's something the company wants to do.

Microsoft has not made any official announcements about the next iteration of Kinect, but an event is being planned for the end of April.

  • im so sick of kinect
  • Just as long as Microsoft makes Kinect optional thats fine, but if it becomes the only way you can play games, I say it's time to walk away.
  • I don't mind the hardware, they just need better software usage for it. Motion controls can be fun given the right circumstances. Microsoft as well as other companies need to brainstorm and figure this peripheral out.
  • Because it was used so well for several games...

  • It's a fun idea for kids to play without having to be control savvy, or even adults that struggle, but it seems to be a large focus for them which worries me.

  • If they can deliver a pretty serious increase in accuracy, it could be great.  Having seen the last Kinect in action, though, I think that Leap Motion thing has much more potential, it seems really accurate and intuitive.

  • Okay, cool. As long as Microsoft improves it then I'm happy.

  • It really depends how its integrated for nextbox. I love my fitness games but thats about it when it comes to kinect.

  • Right now my Kinect is a paper weight :/
  • i want to see what they will bring to the table

  • f*ck you, microsoft
  • If it's 1:1 motion I'll be happy, they were held back by the hardware limitations with the first Kinect, although I did enjoy it for some games and some of the voice commands were solid. Bottom line is that Sony too is launching their next console with a similar camera, it's just how it'll be next generation. Sony and Microsoft need to fight for every console sale, and the casual and family gamer is just as important as the core gamer, especially since the core gamer is outnumbered in a big, big way.
  • i still haven't got the origional Kinect for the 360

  • Nice. Cross platform integration can really spruce some things up.

  • I figured that would be the case. But what TV and Computers will have them installed is the question.
  • Its still worthless for games
  • Kinect is great for parents that want kids to interact with games instead of just sitting. My son will be the perfect age early next year to use the Kinect 2.0

  • iam open for new game ideas, if micro can make this device function correctly it may open a new era of gaming.

  • Kinect has potential in the next gen, because both NextBox and PS4 will be shipping with a Kinect-like device. I feel like part of the problem now is, because it's a peripheral for a single console, developers don't want to bother making games for it since people won't be able to play unless they own both an Xbox AND a Kinect.

Once they start shipping with the consoles, though, it will be part of the core, next-gen console experience, and they'll have more incentive to work with it and really figure out how to use it properly. I feel like we'll start seeing games that use a combination of Kinect and standard controls, instead of just full on motion control games, and that's where it will shine.
  • I owe Michael a drink.
