Former World Of Warcraft Film Director Explains What Went Wrong

The World of Warcraft film has since left the hands of Spider-Man and Evil Dead director Sam Raimi, and into the capable hands of Moon director Duncan Jones. In a recent interview, Raimi explained why his planned version of the film fell apart.

It all comes down to timing, and a lack of Blizzard approval on the script Raimi wanted to turn into a film. Raimi and his writer Robert Rodat produced a script, but Blizzard didn't like it, and while Rodat began work on another script , Blizzard decided to move on. Raimi spoke about his experience working with Blizzard at Vulture.com. Raimi seems understandably disappointed that he and Rodat began work on a second script when Blizzard was never fully on board with their story, but otherwise he doesn't seem too sour about his experience with the famed developer.

  • It's probably for the best.
  • It would have been better if the idea of a Warcraft movie was never conceived.
  • Ah, Duncan Jones. Son of David Bowie... Of course only great things would come from Bowie's loins. Moon was amazing, and for a totally different direction being only his second film, Source Code was pretty good. That said, I'm not sure about a Warcraft movie in general...
  • People still play this game? Seriously?
  • That doesn't really surprise me.

  • Too epic for one movie.

  • This has got me thinking - how many video game movies are in the works right now? Splinter Cell and Gears of War, this and Halo. CoD, even? It seems like I've read about so many, and that's not counting Ryckert's very fun casting calls. I figure the summer of 2015 will be nothing but video game movies.
  • Yeah. Some things are better left not made.

  • Warcraft has some seriously interesting lore, but I still feel like the WoW player base are going to ruin this film.

  • Hmm, I see.

  • This shouldn't be a movie.

  • I love WoW so much. Honestly I would never want it to become a film, though. It's not made for that. It's made to be a world for the player to explore. Don't get me wrong, the Warcraft universe has some amazing lore, but even so, it's just not made for the silver screen.

  • It pretty much fell apart because Raimi would've cast James Franco as a silly looking elf warrior and video-game movies just honestly suck in general. So yeah, I understand. Just make more Warcraft.
  • Thats because Hollywood can't keep there grimy hands off the plot. Take Doom for example. If you're gonna make a movie from a game then stick with the games plot.
  • Why didn't they make a 3DCG movie instead doing with real actors?
  • I feel like a Starcraft movie would make more sense than a WOW movie.
  • Sam Rami is a god, and if he couldn't do this task perhaps it should stay in the grave.
  • I actually wish they would release a Warcraft movie just to hurt the brand name.
  • CGI movie is what we want but that'd be expensive.

  • Raimi is just awful. His movies and shows are complete trash.
