Ubisoft Officially Fesses Up About Next Assassin's Creed Game

Ubisoft finally decided to sweep the rumors aside, officially confirming that the next entry in the Assassin's Creed series is Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. The company isn't releasing further details, aside from an image of the game's hero and a tease that more information will be coming Monday.

It's interesting to see Ubisoft jumping right to the fourth installment instead of telling a few more stories within Assassin's Creed III's Colonial American setting. Perhaps distancing the franchise from that entry isn't the worst idea. Naval battles were a prominent new addition to ACIII as well; the team may have just wanted to focus on that aspect of the franchise.

The Assassin's have always operated outside the traditional structure of law and order, which makes them prime candidates for exploring the treacherous world of piracy. Treasure-hunting is another aspect of the series that's grown, and it's hard to think of a setting that's more attuned to shovels, chests, and hidden artifacts.

Regardless, we'll have more information on the game on Monday at 11. While you're waiting, you can see the uncropped art below.

  • Sweet. This one looks a bit more promising than ACIII did. Might have to pick this up. Hopefully the new Assassin will have more character because Connor was just a friggin bore.
  • I dunno if I'm happy or not...the AC story just kinda sucks.
  • Sweet. I love all of the AC games.

  • sorry doble post
  • Well they just lost a sell right there, yeah the naval battles were good, but still it doesn't feel like an "assassins" game. I was expecting a Chinese or British occupied India setting, but oh well. I will still buy it when its on sale on steam or used from gamestop when is like 40$ or less but not the day of release like I did with the other ones.
  • I'm digging the Caribbean Islands setting for this game. It will definitely be a change of pace and hopefully they can up the story on this one as well as the gameplay objectives..
  • I do love the pirate idea and would love to see some more in depth naval warfare.
  • Am I the only one that wants to see one of these take place in Feudal Japan?
  • Wow, that was...fast. I enjoy the games and all, but I haven't been too crazy enough about the series to buy the expansions (yeah, I know I'm missing out on a huge chunk of the story :P). I was satisfied with 2, and pretty much bought 3 for the settings. I'm not much of a pirate fanatic, so I'll most likely skip this one. Still haven't beaten 3 yet...I keep jumping back and forth between other games :P.
  • I wanted it to go to modern-day Rio de Janeiro, or WWII London and Berlin.
  • Ubisoft... I loved Assassins Creed 3, but why are you already announcing a new game. It's been less than 6 months since release and you are already giving us the details of a new game? What I really want is for them to not have done this and just released a new game in about two years. I'm really getting sick of the new Assassins Creed every year, despite how much I loved AC3 and even Revelations.
  • Man, the sequel to this game better be set in and during the French Revolution.

  • Where's my ice age asassin's creed game?
  • Shiver me timbers.

  • dam i love colonial america....
  • Give this series a rest.
  • I'm more excited about Ubisoft's Watch Dogs. THAT game looks freaking amazing. I even dedicated my GIO profile to Watch Dogs. I bet AC4 will be legit but I'm looking forward to Ubisoft's Watch Dogs wayyyy more.
  • Pirates > Assassins :)
  • Hopefully they'll be smart and release it for this gen and next
