Future EA Games Will All Have Microtransactions

by Joe Juba on Feb 27, 2013 at 06:45 AM

Speaking at a conference, Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen revealed that the company plans to integrate microtransactions into all upcoming titles.

At the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference, Jorgensen said: "We're building into all of our games the ability to pay for things along the way, either to get to a higher level to buy a new character, to buy a truck, a gun, whatever it might be, and consumers are enjoying and embracing that way of the business."

The gamers "enjoying and embracing" this approach may be out there, but given the attitudes among hardcore gamers toward microtransactions, EA announcing its intentions so blatantly is surprising. In-game purchases aren't always bad, but gamers tend to resent being nickel-and-dimed.

Microtransactions may be profitable, but how their global implementation would affect the goodwill of EA's customers has yet to be seen.
