Cliff Bleszinski Is Waiting In The Wings

Cliff Bleszinski left Epic Games last year, and he's already stated his plans to start another studio. But when?

In an interview with Games Industry International, Bleszinski says that it's all a matter of timing, stating that "now would be the absolute worst time to come back.

"I really think we're in a massive state of turmoil," he said. "I think Nintendo could possibly be faced with the situation of becoming a company that only makes software moving forward. I think Sony and Microsoft are about to come to major blows. But at the same time, people love playing games on their iPad. The PC is going through a wonderful renaissance right now. I think we're ready to do digital download games all the time...I just want to see what happens."

Bleszinski also talked about how Sony and Microsoft need to be more nimble on things like software updates, differing price structures, and indie games.

  • Hmmm, I'm kinda getting the same feeling that he has about a few things.  Only time will tell.

  • I disagree with his thoughts on digital only content. There are still many console owners who either do not have an Internet connection or have one so slow it is painful to download games.
  • Although Sony has come out to say they are making indie support one of their focus, along with iPad style cheap or free to play games.  If they can actually deliver on those I think that will help them to become the leader they used to be back with the PS1 and 2.

  • He's following the money basically. Whichever boat appears to be most profitable he'll board it and develop for it. Smart move I guess.
  • I just can't believe how quickly Nintendo went from top of the world to doom and gloom. I, personally, think they've got more breathing room than a lot of people are saying. They're not to the point of Sega with the Dreamcast just yet, maybe Saturn though.
  • Why the heck are you throwing cheap shots at Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, Cliff Bleszinski? Sheesh! I know this is your opinion but most gamers don't wanna play games on their IPad!!! You gotta be kidding me!!! A IPad is nothing compared to a legit console, handheld or even PC! C'mon, Cliff! I like you but I expected a wayyy better reason to why you aren't working. The worst thing he said? "I think we're ready to do digital download games all the time...I just want to see what happens." No, Cliff, nooooooooooo.... Don't you know that most gamers aren't a huge fan of digital games?! Some of us actually like physical copies, man!
  • "I think were ready to do digital download games only all the time" I think doing only digital downloads would have a major impact on not only the stores that sell video games but what about the collectors?

  • Most of the people playing iOS games are not the same people who buy consoles. This imaginary world where they overlap that companies have created seems so weird. Nintendo is far from becoming a software only company, and console gaming is not on the verge of death like people keep saying.
  • In other words. "I have no idea what's going to happen so i'm going to do nothing and spout hypotheticals so i don't get shouted at later."
  • Well, staying out seems logical. He probably is keeping his options open so that he can jump in when a console pulls ahead in sales. I'm interested to see what happens to Nintendo this year too. The Wii U isn't enjoying the same crazy success the original did.
  • When I read the title I thought it had to do something with CHICKEN wings.....
  • Cliff is a smart man. I understand why he wants to relax and wait and see how the industry starts to change and transform at the beginning of the next-gen era.

  • It bothers me that people are so worried that the mobile market is going to hurt the PC and console markets... if you are a true gamer you have a PC or console and use mobile when you, in my case, are waiting for class or sitting on the toilet... lol
  • i have a mixed opinion on these topics :/

  • I would say wait until the inevitable crash of the consoles to come back
  • I agree with a lot of what he says. The game industry looks so rocky with almost weekly updates of studios closing and mobile gaming gaining footing. Big companies need to push for more indie developers and cultivate new IP's in those sectors. I see a future of nothing but Call of Dooty and Halos and Plants Vs Zombies titles on the shelf. That's not a knock at those games, its more of to the point that; yeah there is a lot of money being made but its funneled one spot and not the total industry having growth.

Digital distribution is the way things are going to go eventually, but it needs to be more affordable to consumers (I'm referring to console & PC gaming)and coding needs to be put into place for those that have a hard copy of a game and have the way to install and play it directly from the hard drive without putting the disk in. I don't count on this gen of hardware coming to have a long of life compared to its predecessors. Cloud base gaming is going to be the way this will be in the next five to ten years. We'll have consoles to play DVD's but they'll just be a hub for streaming content more so than they are now.
  • Make a new Jazz Jackrabbit :)

Seriously, he's going to do new IP and that's great. But I'd LOVE to see him go back to cartoony and fun and video gameish. I'd love to see him return to Jazz Jackrabbit.

And, could you imagine a Jazz with the production value of a Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time? Or Ratchet & Clank Future? Or Knack? Jesus... we need way less gritty realism and way more cartoony, fun-looking games.

  • Hearing Cliffy B say something as uneducated and asinine as "Nintendo may become a software company" is pretty much all the proof I need that the guy is, in reality, an idiot.

Such a comment smacks in the face of logic and reality. Nintendo is riding on a generation of the highest success they've ever had with home consoles as well as portable, and the 3DS is currently the dominate hardware sales-wise. All this gloom and doom is based on a brainless 3-month stretch of less-than-favorable Wii U sales, something that will likely turn around the same way it did for the 3DS as we're well aware of some of the titles that are currently in-bound for the system.

This is also the same tired diatribe that the ignorant have stated about Nintendo for ages. Does anyone know anything about gaming history anymore? When Atari and Sega went to software-only, it was after tumultuous years of near constant, depressing failure. Even at Nintendo's lowest (the GameCube and N64), they never saw the rock-bottom disasters that defined the Atari 7800, Atari Jaguar, Atari Lynx, Sega 32X, Sega Nomad, Sega Saturn, and unfortunate early demise of the Dreamcast.

We evolved the top brains in the world. Why not use them?
  • Are those Transformers behind him?
