Eidos President: Next Xbox Uses Watermarked Discs

Sony revealed its next-gen plans a week ago, with the announcement of the PlayStation 4. At the event, the company took a step to alleviate players' fears that used-game sales would be blocked. Microsoft may be going a different route.

MCV India spoke with Eidos' life president Ian Livingstone about the possibility of a digital-only gaming landscape. First, he addressed the plain fact that broadband Internet hasn't yet reached an install base high enough to justify getting rid of disc-based media wholesale. Then things got interesting.

“With the next Xbox, you supposedly have to have an internet connection, and the discs are watermarked, whereby once played on one console it won’t play on another," Livingston said. "So I think the generation after that will be digital-only.”

If true, that could change the way console players look at games. Would games be playable on a set number of systems before they stopped working? Would used gaming be a thing of the past? Would it be suicide for Microsoft to try and take on this approach unilaterally? It certainly isn't the first time we've heard rumblings about this watermarking strategy.

Microsoft supposedly is hosting an event this spring where the company will be talking about its next-gen plans. This isn't the kind of subject that executives like to discuss when they're unveiling a new console, but if Livingstone's right you can expect to see executives squirming and dodging the subject in interviews within a few months.

  • If they go this route, with Sony saying used games will still work, then Microsoft might as well just hang themselves now. I personally prefer new bought games to used, but many people don't.
  • Yikes, that is not a smart move on Microsoft's part. But again, they are the same company that charges for online play while plastering the dashboard with ads.

I don't think they'd be dumb enough to go through with this, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did.
  • I almost never buy used games, but what about game rentals? I always buy my games, but what about people who like to rent?
  • Quick way to kill your business. For this to work Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have to do it together. Thats not happening.
  • If Microsoft does this, than there's no doubt in my mind that Wii U/PS4 are going to be my console duo this gen.
  • Being a big Xbox 360 fan (though I have PS3 as well), I buy most if not all of my games new. BUT, if Microsoft did this, they just lost a lot of gamers.

  • Put down the shovel Microsoft.
  • Safe to assume a stock price drop?

But yeah, wouldn't the lack of a large install base of broadband connections also serve as a means to not let this come to fruition? Though, I suppose one doesn't need particularly quick internet for verification. Not exactly a competitive strategy if Sony still allows the usage of used games.

  • The games better be phenomenal. No, that still might not make it worth it. This could ruin them.

  • If Ford has no right to tell a person where to drive a vehicle once it's bought and taken off the lot then what gives Microsoft the right to tell me where I can take my disc and what machine I can play it on? Consumer control. And the used debate marches on. Hopefully thought this is yet just rumor and nothing more. Hopefully
  • If that's true, I'm definitely going with the PS4 for the next generation.
  • Even as a big fan of Ms and it's IPs, if they go this route, I'm not gonna buy the new xbox. I'll just play the latest halo/gears on my friends after they eventually buy it. Although, I have a suspicion..I wonder if MS was planning on this, and as of last week seeing that the PS4 won't lock used games, I bet MS is probably racing to fix that before it's unveiled. As others have said, if Microsoft does this, then they will officially be out of the console business.
  • Well ill be getting a PS4 then I buy mostly new games but what about going back and playing games I didn't play when they first came out? I just picked up Riddick:AODA which came out in 09' and couldn't find a new copy anywhere and this happens often to me. I also enjoy taking my games over to friends houses and playing some local MP and this plan from Microsoft looks like it will put an end to that as well...

  • If this is true....Game, set, match for ps4.
  • If Microsoft does this, I will not be getting the next Xbox, plain and simple. I usually buy games new, but there have been many times in my life where I simply couldn't afford to buy a 60 dollar new game, so I had to get used. I will never support a company who spits on its customers like this.
  • Key word is "supposedly." We'll see when MS announces the next Xbox. I just can't see them doing this with all the negative feedback they've got and will continue to get.

  • If Microsoft goes through with this, they'll be in a huge disadvantage, taking into account neither Nintendo, and more importantly for them, Sony aren't doing it.

EDIT: I never owned a Microsoft console, nor did I plan on buying one this gen and, assuming they're true, rumours like these give me more reasons to stick with this decision.
  • If this is indeed true, then MS must be pretty nervous that Sony's system allows used games and offline play. With the RFID thing leaked out then MS may have thought Sony was going forward. Of course they could theoretically change the system if they want to delay the machine's launch or this could be turn out to be a false statement.
