Kojima Worried Metal Gear Ground Zeroes Will Be Too Controversial

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima says he's worried that the next entry in the series, Ground Zeroes, will be so mature that it might not sell.

In a roundtable interview with Video Gamer, Kojima explained, "Over the past 25 year I have tried to work with the Metal Gear series to introduce more mature themes, but really it hasn't gotten there yet. Compared to movies and books it still has a long way to go. That's precisely what I want to try to tackle with Ground Zeroes. Honestly I'm going to be targeting a lot of taboos, a lot of mature themes that really are quite risky. I'm not even sure if I'm going to be able to release the game, and even if I did release the game then maybe it wouldn't sell because it's too much. As a creator I want to take that risk."

This is an interesting fear, and we wonder if the new Metal Gear can really push the envelope further than series like Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, and Manhunt already have. We'll just have to wait until Metal Gear Ground Zeroes release to see if the game is really as controversial as Kojima believes. Unfortunately, we don't yet know when that release will be.

  • This game will be god tier.
  • Nope. I will buy it day one...just put it on Wii U please. :P Regardless, I'm excited for this-too mature Kojima? I go to an American high school and read fanfiction, I've seen stuff. :P
  • Do not fear, us gamers are here!
  • Spoiler: Big Boss is into necrophelia.

Edit: This is a joke, and does not reflect GSWarriorsFan's personal definition of mature themes.
  • This could be a shopping simulator and it would still sell. If it has MGS in the title, its as good as gold.
  • Games like the Binding of Isaac have already pushed the limits all that is "taboo". Just make the game. It's Metal Gear, and fans will love it no matter what.
  • i can not wait for this game.

  • sounds good to me

  • That new supermarket I spoke about in an earlier post? They have great pastries but are roughly 25-50% more expensive than other stores. Probably because it's a local family business.
  • Sounds good to me. Metal Gear is general designed for mature audiences, anyway.
  • it will not be on Wii U if it is mature. LOL!
  • I'm game! Bring it on Kojima!

  • I hope they don't harp on this in the marketing campaign. I cringed watching those "your mom will hate this" dead space 2 commercials.

  • Unusual considering that the series has always had mature themes. I wonder what they will put in the game that is crazier then before.

  • The game will sell. We're talking the best game series ever. If you build it they will come.
  • yes, good. we need more great military games pushing the envelope. spec ops: the line was amazing, but got average reviews 'cause peoples' brains are broken.
  • I'm glad he wants to take the risk and talk about things that may be considered taboo and doesn't limit what he wants to do, even if it doesn't lead to great sales. I'm buying it regardless.

  • Doesn't matter, bring it on! And on PC please.

  • Controversial like harvesting children's brains?
  • Comparing MGS themes to manhunt gta and cod. Videogame journalism.
