The lights are on
Deus Ex: Human Revolution film writer C. Robert Cargill and director Scott Derrickson recognize that many video game movies aren't great, which is why they aren't trying to make a movie version of the game.
Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) is directing the upcoming Deus Ex film based on the game while writer C. Robert Cargill (Sinister) is handling the script. During an interview with Crave Online Cargill said, "The chief philosophy is we’re not making a video game movie, we’re
making a cyberpunk movie. We’ve taken a look at what’s worked in video
games and what hasn’t, and really what we’ve broken down is what we
think the audience really wants, [what] the audience that loves Deus Ex is going to want to see out of a Deus Ex
movie. And it’s not a rehashing of the game."
Later on, Cargill added, "We’re trying to break out, and really, the mold for the movies that we’re looking at… We’re looking at movies like District 9 and Looper, and Inception. Those are the molds of what we’ve been doing."
That all sounds pretty good, but it's one thing to say that you want to make a good film, and another to actually make one. We'll see what happens, because we're hoping for the best with this one. In the meantime, check out a teaser for the upcoming movie here.

Looper? Wtf. This movie is going to suck...
Woop, I can't wait to watch a film based around sneaking through air ducts, upgrading your augments and seeing JC Denton take over the world.
Be like another movie/ game story that already been written... Way to be original. I wrote this comment drunk by the way!
Uwe Bowl has said this countless times and look at the masterpieces he has done.
The directors are exactly what worries me....NONE of their work is a standout work to be recognised, i still dnt know how Hollywood give Videogames such as this masterpiece to just anybody.
Wow! The writer and director have a really weak argument. I don't even think they know cyberpunk is!
which is why they aren't trying to make a movie version of the game.
What. Why are you making a film called Deus Ex if it isn't a movie version of the game. The reason all video game movies so far have been bad is that they have had nothing to do with the game.
And it’s not a rehashing of the game.
No. That is what we want. Why would we want an inception clone called Deus Ex? Of course I want a version of the game onscreen. Now, it should be an interpretion of the game, because obviously it can't be exactly the same, but come on...
Deus Ex has a concept that could make a good movie, but not if it's directly based on the game. Having a movie that is based on a game is pointless, why watch a movie when I can play the game and get a fuller experience?
I think the Deus Ex film should be inspired by Deus Ex.
