PS4 May Allow Cross Platform Gameplay With Phones

The new PlayStation may offer gamers a chance to try out cloud-streaming technology, allowing developers to run software on server systems and stream it off the internet. Kazuo Hirai, Sony Chief Executive, took lead in a deal to purchase Gaikai Inc., the game in development using the new “cloud-gaming” technology.

As we reported last week, Sony's new console will stream old games over the internet using technology from a company called Gaikai Inc. Now, according to the Wall Street Journal, The new PlayStation will also allow players to share their gaming experience openly with social media including gameplay videos via YouTube and achievements. Cloud-gaming could eventually lead to the the capability of Sony smartphones and televisions tapping into the games that require high-end graphics, or allow cross platform play against people playing on their mobile devices.

In July, head of Sony’s video game unit, Andrew House, said Gaikai acquisition was a "recognition on Sony's part that the cloud and cloud-streaming technologies are going to have a profound and possibly a very positive impact."

  • Congrats to ps4 whoo : o lol

  • All these rumors make me even more excited for Feb. 20th!

  • I ain't holding my breath until I see it in action. They can hype up all the features they want that sound good on paper, but until I see them working, I ain't biting.
  • Already heard about this a long time ago. Anyways, sounds like it could end up a glitchy mess. If your Internet's down, pffh, there goes your PS3 game time. I really, really wish that they could just have the PS4 be back compatible with hard PS3 copies. (sigh) On top of that, if the PS4's streaming old PS3 games, does this mean you have to REBUY them all over again?!. . .Oh well, guess I'm just gonna hope that the PS4's launch titles are really sweet.
  • I'm betting this will only be available in Japan for the first 2 years. Then Europe the year after that. Followed by the US a year after that. Oh, and Australia and NZ will always have internet that is too 5hit to be able to stream games lol. Maybe in ten years time...
  • Am I the only one that doesn't care if the next gen consoles aren't backwards compatible ? I mean, it's not like i'm going to get rid of my PS3 or 360.
  • Hopefully streaming lets them solve the backwards compatibility problem. If they can't make the system play the older games naively, make it so it can stream those games. So, say I put in my Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater ps2 disk the system will play the game. It won't be using the internal hardware to play the game, but it'll contact "Playstation Cloud" and let you play it off of that. You could play God of War 3 or anything you have the disk to off of the cloud, so long you have the disk. If the PS4 has that (or just native backwards compatibility) along with full PSN compatibility, I'll buy it at launch. Otherwise, I'll wait a few years and keep my precious "60 GB" PS3.
  • That's not an improvement whatsoever... social media must die for its sins!
  • Hm... CoD's about to be even more unbalanced.

  • That's....interesting for those who actually really like that.

  • Interesting...

  • They need to just make all the next gen consoles cross platform and call it a day

  • Real cool but I still don't care. I want games not gimmicks.
  • I am not sold on it yet. It has to be shown and proven of it's worth and capabilities. They failed with the Remote Play for the PS3/PSP/Vita and did not follow up well on the cross play. So, if they want people like me to get this upcoming system for that feature, they need to show and prove of its capability.
  • I am getting tired of all of these rumors. Not that I don't want them to be true, but so many people are taking the rumors to heart as true, that there is going to be at least some form of disappointment that at least one website or person is going to instantly think, "WHAT?! BUT WALL STREET JOURNAL SAID IT WAS GOING TO HAVE THIS! THAT'S IT SONY, I AM NOT BUYING THIS CRAP!"
  • Wednesday needs to get here fast

  • This may be great for Japan, but will not do well in the US. Far too much of the US is running internet through VERY outdated lines, leading to glitchiness, disconnects, and often the internet being out completely for some time.

  • I have used cloud gaming services in the U.S before, It runs pretty fine for single player.
Overall, this is pretty amazing. If it is what it sounds like, then we will be able to play any high end game on any plain pc
  • That would be fantastic but I'm not getting my hopes up until something's officially announced. ^_^

  • Very nice.
