Vita Getting A Price Drop, New Color In Japan

Sony has revealed that its Vita handheld is getting a price cut and a new color in its home turf of Japan by the end of the month.

The system's adjusted price for both the wi-fi and 3G versions is 19,980 Yen, which translates to about $215. That's about $35 to $85 less than what the system is currently priced at here in the states. The price cuts will be taking effect starting February 28. A new Ice Silver version of the hardware is coming to Japan as well.

The timing aligns with Sony's recent statements about the system's sales. Sony CEO Kaz Hirai has said that sales of the Vita and PSP have been on the low end of projections, causing the company to adjust sales projections for its fiscal year ending in March.

There's no word yet as to whether these promotions will be heading over to North America.

  • No shocker here. I knew it would be going down soon, with the sells being so bad. A $200 price tag isn't so bad. I might actually buy one now.
  • I still don't regret buying a PSP earlier this year.
  • Maybe I will get a Vita if these deals come over to NA.
  • About Time! Now it will be on equal footing with the 3DS. Perhaps now they can release a few more games to make it worth the price of entry. Killer App?
  • Told ya the vita price drop now their sales will go up bout time you realize your mistakes sony, but in japan only? america better be rich were wasting money on stupid things especially philly on dumb butt buildings - -
  • As cool as the hardware looks, I just dint think I want it that badly. I think what Nintendo's got in the reel for the 3DS in the upcoming year is a showstopper. Competition will be challenging for Sony. At least here in the States.
  • Might consider buying it now. Here is one step closer to MGS HD Portable Collection.
  • Hopefully that will be enough to get more people to buy it. It's still early in the system's lifecycle, so hopefully it'll get to be like the PS3's variety of library sooner rather than later.
  • About time. The only part that is sad is that it is only in Japan. I am pretty sure it will come over here and they will probably announce it at their Playstation Direct. But the other part that concerns me is that yes there is a price drop for new customers but they need to give something to those who currently own one. Like more games.

  • Man you guys took your sweet time with this news
  • ah price drops.
  • Will it be enough?
  • This is good news. That thing was WAY pricey.

  • That's still not enough for me to buy a Vita. Now a Wii U price drop, that would definitely entice me more.
  • Only $35? Well, that's not enough for P4G, sorry Sony. I'll get the PS2 version. :P
  • You should've done this earlier Sony!!! In fact.... WHERE'S MY ****ING GRAN TURISMO VITA GAME HUH?!?! ARE YOU GONNA ANNOUNCE IT, OR WHAT?!!!!! *Sigh*.... This is what you need to boost up Vita sales. That is all.

  • Are they doing anything with the memory card prices as well? Those are pretty high. Too damn high, one might say...
  • About what I expected, though it'll probably drop to an even $200 here.

  • I'm waiting to see what sort of integration the Vita has with the PS4 before buying one. This $200 price tag is VERY tempting though because the Vita looks like a great system (I want to play Persona 4 really bad). I also didn't read anything about a price drop on the dang memory cards which is another concern of mine. If they would get the Mega Man Legends series on the PSN I would buy one in a heartbeat though. Nothing better than shooting the Bonnes on the go.

  • If its only 200 dollars now then I might get one.

I only have two or three games right now that have me being drawn to it so I guess I'll get it sometime after I get a WIIU.
