Wii U's Sales Were Rough In January

January's NPD numbers are in, and it was a historically rough month for Nintendo's new console. Gamasutra estimates that the system moved between 45,000 and 59,000 units for the month. These figures are especially noteworthy, as they mean the Wii U had a worse month than Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 have had in their entire existence.

It's obviously not great news for Nintendo, but the publisher seems aware of the problem. Recent Nintendo Direct streams have addressed the lack of excitement, and they hope for a strong 2013 with new Virtual Console support and the announcement of big games like Mario, Mario Kart, and a Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker remake.

  • Here's to Nintendo's great announcements boosting sales!
  • I saw two Wii Us in a Sam's club

  • The Wii U is definitely gaining steam right now. With all the great exclusives coming out this year, the virtual console coming in with (hopefully) GamePad remote play, and improvements to Miiverse, it's only up from here. Nintendo will certainly bring it this E3, too.
  • What do they expect when they set up kiosks everywhere without even being able to demo any of the games for the system. People usually like to test drive cars before they buy them right? I recently bought a 3ds xl and i am VERY happy with it and i know that i will eventually get a Wii U when it hits $199 but until then there is nothing worth purchasing this system for.
  • I truly believe that the name of the system is bringing it down.
  • That's understandable. The market was still recovering from the fiesta that was the holiday season.
  • Ouch, hopefully things take an upswing for Nintendo.
  • And no one is surprised. Not because Wii U is bad but because the plan to drop a brand spanking new console and then not put anything out for it for months is maybe not the best marketing plan. They need 80% less promised games and 80% more actual games
  • Thats too bad... Maybe they will get better.
  • Ow... somehow I think this might be an end of an era for Nintendo. They can't rely on Mario for another gen
  • Stinks but hopefully they take it as a sign and start pumping out amazing games we all want. Something I think they will do unlike most studios in entertainment industry.

  • Obviously these are bad news but I'm not terribly worried, mainly because this is after the holiday season, which automatically means people have recently spent and good chunk of money and a new console might not be a great investment, and because admittedly, despite loving mine, I'll admit that the Wii U still doesn't have a lot of great games released at this particular moment; nevertheless, they've obviously addressed this issue with all of the fantastic titles recently announced at their Wii U Direct stream, so I'm also expecting sales to pick up as we're getting closer to the release dates of those games.

  • its cause the wii is still selling well and its cheap for parents to buy they need to hurry up and get rid of them and quit making them if they want there wii U to sell better

i think parents are still confused on what there buying for there kids the name is almost the same all parents know is they want a wii or something if there non gamers also stores need to put the wii games in the bargin bin and get rid of them some walmarts only have 5 or 6 wii U games on the shelf when there are about 20 to 30 or more and the games that are on the shelf are games we got on 360 and ps3

  • Why did they place a picture of the prototype Wii U gamepad? Am I seriously the only one who noticed this?
  • Its a tough economy and alotta die hard gamers can't even afford a console right now. Its okay, Nintendo. This isn't your fault. The economy is sooo rough on the gaming community. Sony and Microsoft will face the same thing when they release their new stuff UNLESS the economy is doing far better.
  • it is a wii hd, so no wonder most dont care and there is barely anything exciting except port that are mostly not up to part...i will wait for the real next gen
  • OMG, what a shocker! Low sales of everything in Jan. Who would have guessed??? XD
  • Ouch.

  • Oh man, when is Nintendo going to wake up. I'm all for Nintendo being "different" thats great but they have got to do that with a system that is technically comparable to Microsoft and Sony. Yes the Wii U compares to the 360 and PS3 but what were they thinking releasing it at the tail end of this generation. I can only imagine that Wii U sales will plummet to laughable numbers once the 720 and PS4 launch.
