The lights are on
Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson was not able to fund a sequel to Psychonauts, but he is funding Age of Wonders III.
According to Eurogamer, Persson has provided enough money so that developer Triumph Studios can skip getting a publisher for their new PC game, though that does not rule out any co-publishing deals.
Apparently, the Minecraft developer is a fan of the Age of Wonders series, and after being contacted by Lennart Sas, co-owner and managing director of Triumph, via email, a deal started to develop.
"It certainly didn't happen overnight," Sas told Eurogamer, "and he kept a healthy business sense towards the project. His biggest concern was that it would cost him a lot of time, so it helped that we made this sort of game before and were at an advanced stage of development.”
The game is set to hit in late 2013. Read our announcement story and watch the launch trailer.
So this was that game that he said he funded for $100k?
I guess it makes sense. This was most likely a lot cheaper to fund than Psychonauts 2 would be.
Thank you Notch. This is one of my favorite series. I feel like if a game is privately funded than it is more likely the developers will try to make a good game for what it is rather than an ultra popular game every idiot and their dog can enjoy.
Cool. Glad he is so generous.
What is age of wonders? Looking up youtube right now.
if it is just as good as the last 2 games in the series... its a day 1 buy for me :)
I wish I had that kind of disposable income :(
Shoulda used some of that Minecraft cash for Psychonauts 2, but I'm glad to hear stories like this anyways. Hopefully it turns out to be worth the investment.
Very cool!
I loved the old Age of Wonders, if the game play is similar I will surely enjoy this.
Can't wait to play the goblin faction!
All the info so far is also available on the Age of wonders 3 fansite:

That's cool of him. Too bad he isn't able to fund Psychonauts 2 though.
that is amazing because i love the AOW franchise and if i was the head of an overly successful game, i would do the same thing. kudos Persson!
