Michel Ancel Publicly Decries Rayman Delay

The well-known Ubisoft developer is objecting to the delay of the Wii U version of the anticipated game.

In a photo obtained by Eurogamer, Michel Ancel poses with other members of the Ubisoft Montpellier development team of Rayman Legends, holding a sign that reads (in French) “Release Rayman. Support Ubisoft Montpellier.”

The public show of disconnect between the Montpellier developer and its parent publisher comes several days after an unnamed developer from the studio posted online about the team’s frustration with the game's delay. Having put in countless hours of crunch and overtime to complete the game, the team is unhappy about the decision to hold off another several months on release in order to have a day one release that includes the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game. Ubisoft responded with plans to release an exclusive demo of the game to Wii U players, but not the full release.

We’re reaching out to Ubisoft regarding Ancel’s posted photos, and we’ll update this story with any response.

  • The team isnt the only one whos unhappy.
  • OBJECTION!!!!
  • All they are going to do is hurt their own damn game with the delays. The Wii U people were probably looking forward to it and now will forget about it because it will be crammed with all the other fall releases. The xbox and ps3 owners are probably either going to be preoccupied with the next gen stuff or just busy with the other 8,000 games releasing during the same time frame.
  • i dont own a wii u but if i was nintendo i would take this to court, this will do more bad than good not just for the wii u but for the game, as a 360 owner i could care less about this game but this just a right, and what the hell a demo gona do? just aint right for you guys
  • Wow. So the guy who *** created Rayman doesn't get say in this situation. *** Ubisoft, I hope they fold.
  • This is very sad for the development team.... bad leaders can really ruin your work....

  • Wait... Ubisoft is french?
  • THQbisoft
  • That poster wasn't unnamed.

  • With all the hard work these people put in to completing the game before the deadline, they deserve to see their game on shelves at the promised date. If Ubisoft wont respect you guys then I will!! GOOD WORK GUYS!!! YOU WORKED REALLY HARD AND YOU DESERVE A BREAK!!
  • I don't get why Ubisoft did this. People keep saying that it is to save marketing dollars but that doesn't hold water. What about all the marketing they've already done? Pumping out Demos and E3 presentations isn't cheap. That is completely wasted now because they delayed the game 7 months. I own a Wii-U and I would love to buy this game now because I don't want anything else being released in Q1 besides Sim City. In September it is far less of a sure thing for me to buy this game. I am getting FIFA 14 and GTA V for sure. If nothing else I want releases that month I might get Rayman Legends but that is a big if considering that Nintendo might put something out by then.
  • C'mon, Ubisoft higher-ups. Everyone knows how stupid this delay is and how you just pissed off pretty much everyone by doing it. Just release the game and give those guys and gals at Montpellier the things they deserve.
  • And now we see how publishers screw developers.
  • Ha! Right on, Ancel's team. Stick it to The Man!
  • I really hope that this works. I'm so mad that Ubisoft decided to delay a COMPLETED game, so, if this can help get them to change their minds, i'll be happy.

  • Ohhhh......kay... :(

  • Is it me, or is Ubisoft turning into Capcom?
  • Come on Ubisoft...just release the Wii U version now and get it over with!

  • I'm hoping that all of this backlash will basically force Ubisoft (strictly from a PR perspective) to release the Nintendo version at the specified date. I, like everybody else, will be MUCH too busy during the fall months with the other video game releases to pick up Legends. I mean Wind Waker HD will be out, plus I will already have: Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, Monster Hunter Ultimate, Lego City: Undercover, and Pikmin 3...that's not even mentioning all the PS3/PC/360 games I will probably get. I will just end up never buying it or getting it when it's like $10.
