Next Xbox May Have 500GB Hard Drive, And Run Multiple Games At Once

Rumors about the new Microsoft video game console continue to swirl around news channels, with a number of new tidbits being shared today.

Kotaku has published a rundown of the new console, containing information from a source who claims to have access to an early dev kit. The alleged insider states the new console can run multiple games or apps at once, requires game installations that can take place automatically in the background, and requires a new version of the Kinect sensor to be plugged in at all times. The new console also reportedly ships with a 500GB hard drive.

Other notes explain that a new controller is being developed, and that Xbox 360 game pads will be incompatible with the new console. The system is also rumored to support 3DTV sets, and include built-in wi-fi.

The source claims to have two development kits for the new console, codenamed Durango, but the information should be taken with a grain of salt as nothing has been confirmed, and Microsoft could change any number of things during development. So far, Microsoft has not even acknowledged the development of a next-gen console.

Previous rumors state that the console requires a constant Internet connection, may not play used games, and will play Blu-Ray discs.

Which rumors would you like to come to fruition?

  • Yes, Yes, YES! Even though, I rather just play 1 game at a time.
  • This xbox will be alot different then the last, probably alot more family oriented
  • I also heard it can play actual tennis with you and can run Mario games.
  • Why multiple games at once? I don't really see a benefit to it :/
  • Welcome to the future. It seems amazing, but they're only rumors. I still fail to see the need of a Kinect sensor, though.
  • Sounds alright, except for the Kinect and Controller bits.

  • The multiple games feature sounds kinda like what the Vita has, where you can have several apps running at once. By hitting the home button, you can scroll through and instantly pick up on any game where you left off. It's handy for checking out the store, trophies, and other things while you still have your game going.
  • Also not rumored, but confirmed to have to be connected to internet at all times to play games. No thanks, Microsoft.
  • Its a rumor, so I won't believe it unless MS confirms it.
  • This all sounds pretty good, except one thing... why not just have the system be able to use the 360 controller? Other than to get people to buy new controllers that is. I love the feel of them, as many people do, and the only gripe I have with 360 controllers is the d-pad, and thats not even a big deal (to me at least).
  • Sounds pretty cool, but I'm still hoping that 24/7 online play isn't mandatory.

  • That last part: "previous rumors state that the console requires a constant Internet connection, may not play used games." . Man, I hope that isn't true. Microsoft would be pushing many customers away if the next Xbox refuses to play used games and must have a Internet connection to work properly. I really hope those rumors are fakes and not true. Other than that... the next Xbox sounds pretty dang good!
  • Almost everything that has been said about the next Xbox, to me, sounds worrisome. Always online, mandatory Kinect, no used games, and no support for 360 controllers :/. These are all just rumors of course. Still makes me worried.
  • Alt-TAB that shat!
  • People give way too much legitimacy to rumors. Most of all of them are always untrue.

  • Can't imagine the kinds of system bricking issues will result from leaving 1 game suspended while playing another. Then again, multiple games in the same series could implement game play mechanics that require the user to jump between games. Fans of time traveling tales should be especially excited.
  • Built in Wi Fi?! What sorcery is this??

  • O_O dang if its real that would be crazy

  • Every rumor thread is sillier than the last one. Next rumor will probably say that the nextbox will have 3 Nvidia GTX 680 3GB video cards.
  • Suprisingly enough, I'm excited. Only problem is Sony and Microsoft both said, if they decide to announce a new console development it won't release till at least mid 2014.
