The lights are on
NBCUniversal is rebranding G4 as a more general-purpose men's interests channel called Esquire Network starting April 22. Now that all that pesky gaming programming is out of the way, Esquire Network is free to brave new frontiers with its first two original series: a reality cooking show and a celebrity travel series.
The network is intended to be an upscale men's entertainment hub, focusing on things like cars and politics rather than bikinis and explosions. Esquire magazine's editor-in-chief David Granger, who will be "working closely" with NBCUniversal on the network, described his view of Esquire Network's programming to The New York Times as "not duplicative of what readers find in the magazine, but in the same wheelhouse.”
The network will also be showing re-runs of content owned by its megacorporation parent company, including Parks and Recreation and Party Down.
It wasn't wall-to-wall solid gold, but G4 was a cable channel dedicated to games, gamers, and gamer culture. I'll be pouring one out for it and the hard-working folks who made G4 what it was later this evening, and I invite you to do the same.
The end of G4 is complete. May their souls rest in peace.
Look G4 sucked so they can do whatever they want with the channel now. The thing of it, though, is that it's ALWAYS GOING TO SUCK because NBCUniversal is in charge of this channel's fate and they're unbelievably incompetent these days. Many cable networks get better ratings than NBC shows these days - that would be inconceivable even five years ago. Stuff that constitutes a hit for them now only get, like, 4 million viewers on average - compared to Seinfeld and Friends numbers (who's finales got over 70 and 50 million viewers respectively), it's positively shameful. You look at how they manage their other cable networks, like SyFy, and you see nothing but incompetence. They don't even have a day-to-day schedule for SyFy; they just air sh**ty movies (both actual movies and their infamous tv movies) and sh**ty reality shows starring people who CAN'T FIND GHOSTS.
My point is this. NBC is the Square-Enix of TV. And I will take any opportunity to rip on them.
So good luck Esquire. You're gonna need it...
That is one channel that I will probably never watch. I also do not consider myself to be an "upscale man" so maybe that's why.
Very unfortunate. I have such fond memories of watching X-Play, Judgement Day, Icons, G4tv.com...it goes on and on.
"upscale men" I'm guessing that means people that make a lot more money than me :/
RIP G4. Even if I hated your later years...
Tech TV was the coolest, though.
That is so weak, dude. We don't need any more cooking shows. The only time I want to see celebrities are when they get torn apart by TMZ.
Not a good idea for a new channel.
they shoulda just called it the *** network
Okay I am going to be really strong right now in pure cursing -CENSORING LIKE NO TOMORROW- There goes our network.............Gamers get no freaking love.
Now I just need to figure out how to remove a favorite channel from my list. so sad...
Not surprising since the channel ended up basically showing Ninja Warrior, Cheaters, and Cops re-runs.
