Xbox Delivered 18 Billion Hours Of Entertainment In 2012

Sorry, Microsoft. I left my Xbox 360 on idle for at least 50 hours in 2012. Please revise your numbers to account for my food breaks and unexpected naps. Regardless of how each user spends their time on their Xbox 360 or Xbox, 18 billion hours of entertainment is an impressive number, growing over 10 percent since 2011. Microsoft's data also shows that the average user spent over 87 hours a month on their Xbox 360 or Xbox, another 10 percent gain since 2011.

Here are some other fun facts that Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft's senior vice president, released regarding Xbox 360 and Xbox usage in 2011:

  • Since July, the Xbox Live community burned 200 million calories using Kinect workout programs and games
  • Family content viewing on Xbox Video grew over 400 percent
  • The Hunger Games broke the record for biggest opening day on Xbox Video
  • According to Experian Simmons Spring 2012 Media survey, 38 percent of Xbox Live players are female
  • Experian data also shows that 54 percent of the community has at least one child in the household
  • Entertainment app usage grew 57 percent year over year
  • 24 million Kinect sensors have been sold worldwide
  • The Xbox Live community now boasts 46 million subscribers, a 15 percent YOY growth
  • Xbox 360 has been the number one selling console for 24 consecutive months in the U.S.
  • 76 million consoles have been sold worldwide

  • ...honestly, it makes me a little sad that a significant portion of that time was spent playing Bejewled and Call of Duty. Impressive but still... *grabs flameshield*
  • video games for life, lets keep stuff like this rolling

  • Since Xbox Live got Crunchyroll, I've been logging in some impressive hours.

  • That sure is a lot of bullet points for "17.999 billion hours of Netflix and some gaming" over 2012.
  • Sadly I wasn't a part of any of this... I really wish I could get Gold but I really am too frugal and I don't want to lay down $60 for a year long subscription when my Xbox will probably break within that time (for the 3rd time in 3 years.)
  • Hell yea, wonder how much hours Sony's got.
  • 87 hours seems super low to me. And 24 million kinects seems super high...why would you want that?
  • That's some impressive numbers, but I know i have used mine way more than 87 hours. I have done more than that just on Borderlands 2.
  • And the Xbox 360's global top seller status was usurped by the PS3 over 2012, so again, there's some BS to this--as there always is for these kind of press releases. Beyond that, the 3DS has been outselling pretty much everything.
  • That's amazing. I probablyspent at least 300 hours on mine last year.
  • Yeah, suck on that PS3 and Nintendo! (Insert obnoxious crotch chops).
  • so many hours so many red rings of death

  • greg miller of ign turned on his xbox in 2012, and got cancer.
  • 24 million Kinect sensors? ...what?
  • During the 2005 E3 reveal of the Xbox 360, they were only expecting 2 million by the end of that year. Crazy that it has hit 46 million! Oh and if you want to feel old, go watch the Microsoft e3 conference revealing the 360, can't believe it'll be 8 years this summer.
  • wow. thats alot.

  • no one cares anymore. Give me next gen already huga guga bababa :o!!
  • Hahahah okay, this is cool. I kinda feel like Microsoft is bragging. Soon Big N and Sony will unleash something very similar to this, like reveal their own stat report.

  • You can count me for a handful of those hours. Although, I think I'm gonna be a PC gamer going forward (will still get a 720/PS4 for exclusives) since I'm tired of PC gamers always getting the most graphically advanced version of every game.
  • Not entirely relevant, but I just realized I have been reading Andrew's stuff for what has got to be getting close to 20 years by now. Always my favorite from the GI staff.
