Hasbro Shuts Down Unlicensed My Little Pony Fighting Game

A group calling themselves Mane6 has been working on an unlicensed fighting game based on the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic TV show for the last two years. Unfortunately, Hasbro has shut the project down.

According to the group's official blog, Hasbro sent them a cease and desist letter asking them, "to cease game development, remove any materials that might contain My Little Pony characters, names, locations or related elements from the sites we control (Our site, our youtube, our twitch), and 'cease any further use of [their] MY LITTLE PONY property'."

Mane6 has complied with Hasbro's request, removing all content from their site.

Mane 6 has responded to Hasbro's letter saying, "We have attempted negotiating with Hasbro for the continued use of the property in our non-profit, voluntary project, but so far we haven't received an answer."

There is one Hasbro approved My Little Pony game that you can play for iOS. We spoke to producer Barnabé Anglade about it, and you can read the interview here.

  • *** hasbro. [The swear filter is there for a reason. Please don't bypass it, okay? Thanks - RQ]
  • Lolwut.
  • Hasbro, anti horse violence since 1922
  • Sucks for the people making their game.

  • I have no interest in my little pony, and have no idea how it because such a huge deal. However, I heard about this a year ago or so from someone who's into this, and they were really looking forward to this. Not to mention they were working on it for 2 long years before Hasbro shut them down. I really hate when companies shut down fan projects like this. How can it be good for business to treat your fans like that?
  • and yet hasbro doesn't give a *** about the fanfic "cupcakes"
  • If Hasbro was smart, they would've done what Capcom did with Megaman X Street Fighter and license the game instead, considering how popular this game was getting
  • lets hear that bronie rage.
  • To spend two years of your life working on something that earns you no profit, only to have it shut down. That sucks.
  • "Beat the snot out of a pony for no real reason!" The game developers must've been drunk off Budweiser(goblin pee) to go ahead with something so talentless and tasteless. It would've been better to try a side-scroller or classic Sierra style adventure game.
  • I never thought Hasbro would do that. They try so hard trying to appeal to the MLP fans and now they are going piss a lot of them off.
  • "Bronies Everywhere Yell in Anger"
  • I bet it's because Hasbro is making their own licensed fighting game based on the show. [/s]
  • I heard about this last night. Its a shame, these people put a lot of work into this. And actually, it looked really fun and had an AWESOME soundtrack.(from what is up on youtube)

  • Lol

  • What? I don't see why they would do that, especially now when they're probably close to finishing it. I guess that's why I read Lauren Faust tweet to Mane6 about making original characters for a game for them.
  • I honestly don't even understand what the point of shutting it down is. Granted, I don't know really anything about legal company stuff, but it seems to me like there wouldn't be anything negative coming out of this. The stuff that'd be in the game is not that much more violent than the show itself. But, like I said, all of that's over my head anyways. On the bright side, Lauren Faust, the show's creator and the lady who designed all of the characters, has offered to create original characters just for their game. So I don't think it's fully dead yet. :)
  • As long as Hello Kitty: Island Adventures is still around, it's all good!
  • Should have been expected.  It would suck to work hard for 2 years just to have it taken down like that...

  • Couldnt they have it protected under the law that allows parodies?
