Report: Sony's PS4 Priced At Over $400

According to a newspaper article from Japan, Sony's upcoming system will be north of $400, but less than the initial PS3 offerings.

Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun reports that the PlayStation 4 will retail for 40,000 yen, which works out to be about $428. This would be a bit less than the initial price of the PS3 back when it released in Japan in 2006 with 20GB ($499) and 60GB ($599) configurations. Speaking of which, the Asahi reporting of a single price would seem to indicate that Sony will launch with only one version of the console this time, but that has not been officially confirmed.

Also mentioned in the report is that the system's controller will be similar in shape to the current one, but will have touchpad.

We expect to find out more about the system at Sony's February 20 event.

  • Better than $599 at launch. As much as a PlayStation fanboy I am, I will be waiting for a later model. Nonetheless I'm excited for the new console.
  • I laughed so hard when I read this. Insanity is what it is. I love Sony products but this is ridiculous. As I said before in a related topic, Wii U here I come!!
  • Good news is, the price is not what will matter... ***wallet jumps out of back pocket, slaps me in face with debit card*** No, seriously wallet...it won't matter. ***wallet raises debit card again*** Wait, Wait! Hear me out... ***wallet settles down from its aggressive posturing slightly*** Wallet, if the console is truly amazing in its progression in terms of system capabilities, creative medium available and overall performance, is the price REALLY that bad? I mean, seriously wallet, we blow HUNDREDS of dollars on crap we don't need and going out on the weekends...if it's worth it, it will be okay, I promise! ***Wallet puts away debit card, looks contemplative and says, "alright, but no more blowing our money on terrible games like Superman and licensed crap or I'll beat you silly."*** Okay wallet...I'm sorry. The new generation of consoles is gonna be awesome, isn't it? ***Wallet: "It sure is...now get back to work and quit wasting time on the GI website again, slacker. Daddy needs to get paid. ***
  • As long as it isn't five hundred ninety-nine US dollars, banking on some weird controller gimmick, or running exclusively with AT&T; I think the PS4 will do just fine in it's release. Now watch as all the things I just said come true.
  • So excited to see a new Sony system. I'd gladly drop 500$ on this baby!
  • Yikes. That's expensive. But if they come out with a good launch line up of games, it may be worth getting on launch day...
  • I wonder if either sony's or microsoft's next consoles will support 'old' controllers... I'm so very tempted by the Sabertooth for the 360 but, kinda don't want to get it until I know this.
  • So 450? I dropped $500 on a PC last year. I'm very interested in seeing if my PC will still beat out the PS4.
  • I usually wait a year for new consoles anyway...

  • i will accept current prices if the reliability is greatly improved. also, where's my full install option?
  • I always want a system when they are new.. but the games don't tend to get good for several months, for the most part.
  • I read that initially the PS3 was priced at about 650, according to Japan pricing but when it came over here it was 599, thus hopefully making this starting price at 399 initially.
  • Well, yes, since they will be working with x64 and not the bull *** custom CPUs of the ps3 and Xbox 360, they will be able to produce games a lot faster now, and they will look significantly better.

  • Ok so probably $500 after taxes, and before games. BUT it also has a touchpad which I assume will be similar to the Wii U pad but smaller? Idk, but that still sounds like quite a bit of money to me. I did buy a Wii U so that's not a HUGE difference in price, but it is a difference. I'm also assuming the specs are better on this console, but still an extra $150 is quite a bit which is what I was afraid of in terms of the new systems. I just assumed around $450, and $500...most people who aren't "hardcore" game buyers would rather pay around $300 to $350 at the most for new gaming hardware. I myself will probably buy one of these but just not at launch, I'm having tons of fun with my PS3 right now and I only bought it a little over a year ago so I'm not ready to move on yet lol still have quite a bit of catching up to do as far as my backlog goes.
  • If the rumors of Xbox's blockade on Used games and it's online always policy turn out to be true I may jump go rougue and return to my Sony roots even if its pricey. I was turned off this gen by the whole Mega Price/No Duelshock/ Slot disk tray/weak initial online support/hacking contreversy/Lack of full backwards compatibility set of fiasco's, there are plenty of exclusives I would love to have played (and may yet still assuming PS4 is backward compatible), and Sony seems to have done a good job of steadily addressing most of there issues by now, I'm sure they will take those lessons into the next gen. I vote with my pocket I can't support buisnesses who do things I don't agree with, so Sony, if your listening, avoid these pitfalls and the potential rumored MS pitfalls and you got your self a return customer. That said I'm a late adopter, that is to say I wait and see how the launches goes before throwing down hard earned cash blindly, a recomended practice in this ressecion. Plus I have a massive backlog of games I'm still plodding through which are holding me back from enjoying alot of the stuff coming out right now, so I'm gonna take the wait and see approach, crossing fingers, Sony don't mess this up.

  • Here's hoping it's only $401! (I know, I know, that's not possible... But can't I dream?)
  • That's cheaper than I expected :D

  • Considering the PR nightmare that was "SIX HUNDRED AMERICAN DOLLARS," this is an improvement.
