Sony Cuts PlayStation Vita & PSP Sales Projection

Reporting on its recent performance in the third fiscal quarter ending last year, Sony has once again revised its sales estimates for the Vita and PSP handhelds for the fiscal year ending in March.

Both handhelds are now expected to sell seven million units worldwide. This echoes CEO Kaz Hirai's earlier comments that sales of the Vita in particular were on the "low end" of what the company was expecting.

According to Gamasutra, this is not the first time the company has revised its outlook for the two portable units.

  • But whyyyyy? Vita doin.....it's doin goooood. Vita's got that one game......called, thing killer... something. It's fun to play with Vita. I use mine instead of my loofah. It smells like kiwi-strawberry. So that's a thing. It'll pick up. When that new game comes out, starring......Shaq, It'll pick up...
  • Could we see a price drop?

  • Hopefully with the release of games like Soul Sacrifice and Killzone, the system may pick up a bit. It still needs more games to sell it though. A sequel to Gravity Rush would certainly be welcome and I know I'm looking forward to the Y's game coming out in the Summer.
  • All Sony has to do is lower the price and get more good games for it and the Vita would be crushing the 3DS. Who would want to buy a Vita when for like less than 50 bucks more you could get a PS3?
  • Release more awesome games and lower the price. Then they will sell more Vitas.
  • The Vita's problem, lack of games. Sad reality really, it's like they didn't learn from the PSP, heck I personally argue the game library is worse on Vita :(
  • The lack of games is the sole reason i have not bought a vita yet.

  • The lack of games is the sole reason i have not bought a vita yet.
  • The Vita has many games, they are mainly Japanese games.
  • The Vita has "some" games, but it doesn't have THE game that is a system seller. The Wii U is sort-of going through the same thing (even though it's been out WAY shorter) is that yeah it has some nice ports, but it doesn't have THE system seller yet, Zelda etc... (fyi I own a Wii U and love it, just sayin') Another problem is that dang memory card. I get what Sony was trying to do, but that KILLED them in the beginning of the systems' life. Mostly now it comes bundled with it, but they should've done that from the get go, and not tried to charge you extra for it. Heck I probably would've even bought one had it not been for the extra $$$ it took for the memory card. I'm not getting one now because I have way too many games in my backlog to get to. Hopefully this system doesn't go belly-up and starts to do well because I would like to have on in the future. The problem is, what is the future? What's for sure coming out besides Soul Sacrifice?
  • I like my Vita and all but it doesn't help the fact that I can still play my DS games on my 3DS but I can't play any of my PSP games on a Vita. So I figured that hurts the Vita sells as well
  • The Vita's problem is not just a lack of games but it is also the games it is getting right now. Nobody wants to play a lesser version of a game they can play on their home console, people want different games. The 3DS is not winning because of its price alone but also the fact it gets custom made games for the hardware that are made by Nintendo's A-Team developers that's why you get great games like Super Mario 3D Land, Kid Icarus, Mario Kart 7 and Fire Emblem. Sony hasn't done this with the Vita. They keep offloading what should be their premier franchises to B or C level studios and the results have been mostly bad.

  • Sales will pick up once the Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 exclusive drops for Vita this Xmas.
  • So Sony cuts their projective sales year back down to 7 million and no one bats an eye. But Nintendo cuts their projective sales year down to 15 million and people start saying Nintendo is going out of business. Seems like some media outlets(not saying GI) are a little bias.
  • I'm still using my PSP as much as ever, perhaps because Japanese developers are still releasing games for it. I have a 3DS, which I love, but I want to buy a Vita eventually; one of the advantages of the Vita is the fact that it's region free, so I can supplement the Vita's relatively small game library with Japanese games.

Sony really needs to get some high-profile developers on board with the Vita if they want to sell more units.

  • They cut everything except that which they need to cut, THE PRICE!
  • "Aw crap!".

Said by Nathan Drake seeing this as his reaction.

  • And why are they making a PS4 when they are losing money hand over fist.
  • classic sony time to count ur loses and get out the handheld part of the buisness nintendo has that *** locked up. so sony stop making the same mistake over and over with

  • more games for vita!
