Rumor: Next Xbox Requires Online Connection

As we get closer to the official unveiling of the next Xbox, more talk circulates about the console. A new round of chatter says that an online connection will be required.

Edge says that sources with good knowledge of the upcoming system say that it will require an online connection, but that physical discs for it will still be sold at retail. If this rumor is true, it would certainly jibe with what we've heard developers talk about when characterizing the next-generation of systems: a gaming environment that is "always on."

The article also mentions the system's prohibition of used games, use of Blu-ray discs, and an upgraded Kinect – stuff we've heard before.

If this always-on rumor is true, while annoying and even a barrier to entry for some consumers, it would seem to fit into Microsoft's stated ambition to make its next system streaming/downloadable media focused.

  • if your connection goes down then we cant get on ?

  • Dont mind being online all of the time, i just dont want to be randomly disconnected all of the time. Also, if the console doesnt play used disks, developers better guarentee that i can always buy a new copy regardless of how old game is. Right now the only way to get games that are really old is used, unless you want to pay bank on amazon from someone.
  • Requires an internet connection! As in, if you can't get online you can't play? If so I'm out, sorry Microsoft this just doesn't work and it was the next gen Xbox I was most excited about. Thinking about it from a business standpoint, I think it's a false rumor mind you, and now I just hold on to that hope.

As for the prohibition of used games, I have a feeling they may be cutting off their nose to spite their face. I buy a ton of games, I mean like way to many... BUT, the ability to trade fuels this. I play a game for a bit, trade it, buy another. If used is out, meaning zero resale on games I do buy, I will have to slow down on the number of used games I buy.. maybe by a significant factor. Now, assuming I'm not alone (someone is trading all of these games right ;), this effect may be seen across many people. Therefore it's a zero sum, if you do the math. Then revenues aside, studios will suffer because people are considering much harder what they are willing to buy and then there is the whole retail side of things, people losing jobs and such as major used game retailers go under. Or I could be very wrong, Steam does very well, and I mean with digital distribution you can't trade/resell and heck you don't even own anything (if Steam goes away, so do your games).
  • Dang. Hope this turns out to be false.

  • I honestly don't like the direction the gaming industry is going in. I am all for innovation and trying new things, but this is plum ridiculous. Is there any need to have a console that needs the internet in order for it to be playable? First the V-chip in LCD screens and now this? I feel like I am honestly being monitored while I am playing a game. Whatever the case maybe, these rumors are the very reason why I have opted to purchase a Wii U.
  • This rumor is false! The new Xbox may have an option for always on internet for things like cloud saves or game updates similar to the Playstation Plus feature but it won't be required. Why you ask? Because a recent report from the FCC stated that 1/3 of US households lack access to broadband internet. Think about that, a third. You really think MS will release a console that 1/3 of the country can't use? Why don't they just make an Xbox that only works on HD TV's over 55" while they're at it.
  • I REALLY doubt microsoft is this stupid. However.....I'm willing to believe people are that greedy AND stupid so.....lets hope it really IS just a rumor and not a fact
  • NEXTBOX 720.......  No poor people allowed

  • online all the time? Why? I don't want to be monitored almost every minute. Either way, I'd just turn off my WiFi then we'll see if I'm still online or not haha. Prohibition of used games? So they always believed that munny grows on trees. Well if the price of their games aren't more than $35-$40 then I won't have as much of a problem with that.

  • What irks me about this is the fact that internet connections go down all the time, and when they do, what's one of the first places people turn?  Their gaming systems.  So now if our connection goes down we can't even play XBOX?  That'll suck.

  • i dont think it is a good thing..why should i be connected all the time if i wanna play my game? it should be a choice...i dont know who the idiots who give those console makers such ideas but they must not listen to them...this is a very alienating idea...stupid

  • I doubt this is true. Look at how well "always online" worked for Diablo 3. I will never buy a system that requires internet connection for the simple fact that the internet goes out from time to time. I don't have but one option where I live for cable internet and they don't care about customer service. I gotta be able to play my games.

  • ...no comment because im offline right now...
  • Wow. All of these rumors in such a short amount of time. Can't wait until the next-gen experiences are formally announced by both Microsoft and Sony.

  • If it's true I wont buy.

    Simple as that.

  • If these rumors are true then I'm completely switching to PC games. I might have to wait a few extra months for games but at least I would be able to play them anywhere and anytime.

  • hmm if it ends up being true it will piss a lot of people off.. if there is no way at all to play your game off the disk without a connection that's going to feel pretty shi*ty i think

  • My guess is that Sony is doing the same thing. I bet Microsoft had to agree to this to be able to put blu-ray into the system.

  • The new Xbox sounds worse with every rumor.
