Sony And PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Developer Go Separate Ways

We reported last month that SuperBot Entertainment, developers of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale (read our review), issued a significant number of layoffs. Today we’ve learned that Sony has severed its relationship with SuperBot on friendly terms.

"Sony Computer Entertainment can confirm that the working agreement with developer SuperBot Entertainment has amicably ended," said a Sony representative in correspondence with Kotaku. "We have had a positive working relationship with this talented studio, and wish them the best of success in their next endeavor. PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale and the title's forthcoming DLC releases will continue to be fully supported by Santa Monica Studio."

SuperBot shares Sony’s positive perspective on the former partnership, and is “very excited about beginning the next chapter of [its] future…”, according to director of operations David Yang.

No more staff reductions are planned for the immediate future, but  SuperBot states “…it is unlikely we can continue with our current work force for an extended period of time.”

    For the simple fact of using Sir Daniel Fortesque from MediEvil, this game was awesome.

    It's a shame to see it happen but I'm not shocked. Wasn't that great of a game and they should of released it earlier than they did.

    80% of the fun of playing Smash Bros was playing as Nintendos lovable, iconic characters. Nobody cares for Sonys characters like that. There is no nostalgic feeling playing as Nathan Drake or Kratos. Should have used the time and effort on a better, more original project.

    I played the beta and disliked it, but after giving it a real chance I really enjoyed performing combos. While it is no super smash bros. it's disappointing to see superbot and Sony part ways.

    PSAS was in need of retooling. I know it had to do with the choices of Smash Bros, but hopefully, it will happen next time...

    Such a shame. I love PSABR. Got Platinum in both PS3 and Vita version. Bought a physical copy the day it came out, then won a free DL copy in a twitter contest! 'Twas a good day.

    I know there was a lot of hate of this being a smash bros clone, and while im aware its a different beast entirely, Part of me wishes that it actually was a clone. Am I the only one?

    I thoroughly enjoy playing PSABR. The ones who are saying "Oh well that's no surprise." Clearly haven't played the game, or if they did, they really didn't give it a chance. This game is great. I'm glad Sony Santa Monica will be picking up the pieces with the future DLC.

    Just for the record, I didn't like PSASBR.

    I feel better for them. They won't be under any more tight corporate pressure when pursuing their goals. They may be on a certain critical moment, but at least they got full creative freedom, and I hope they can use it well.

    This is sad to hear and it's just another example of Sony failing to market their products properly. SuperBot made a great game that just didnt sell well either because it wasnt marketed enough or because of too many people coming in with a negative attitude saying that it's just a lesser version of SSB. I hope SuperBot lands on their feet and I hope that Sony Santa Monica can continue to support this game with DLC
