Half-Life 2 VR Head And Gun-Tracking Mod Looks Great

We recently posted a news story showing off a Half-Life 2 mod that uses a camera to sense player’s head movements, allowing them to carefully peak around corners. A new head and gun-tracking mod has arrived on the scene that puts the previous effort to shame. Oculus Rift developer Nathan Andrews has posted a new video showing how the technology will make players truly feel like they’re in Gordon Freeman’s HEV suit.

Nathan uses some of the same technology John Carmack previously showed in use with Doom 3 BFG Edition. The tech allows the game to track the players head and gun position, allowing them to look and aim freely. The marksmanship shown off in the video below is deadly accurate, and should make fans of the Half-Life series very curious. Nathan makes shooting down Combine ships and Manhackss look like a breeze.

Consumer versions of the Oculus Rift aren’t yet available, but if you’re a tinkerer you can pick up the dev kit for $300 and download Nathan's Half-Life 2 mod (compatible with Episodes 1 and 2).

  • Sounds nice... pointless but nice

  • I would hate to have to move my head like that to play a shooter.
  • Dude.... This is pretty awesome. I'd be worried about walking into stuff in my room, though. Reminds me of that VR world from Johnny Quest.
  • I'm seriously debating on picking up the dev kit for this. I really don't even know what the heck I would do with it, but I've always wanted to try the whole dev. thing out. I got tons of ideas, just none of the technology to get it done, and this might help me out.
  • Ladies and gentelmen, the future of gaming has arived.
  • If we can get a better Kinect with this, a fps Iron Man would definitely be on my wish list.

  • I would love to try this out.

  • Cool, could be interesting to see implemented in real life, even though it looks a lot more physically demanding than normal keyboard/mouse or controller.

  • How does he control movement?
  • Haha nice.

  • Sweet. This sure took some pure genius. If they ever do make Half Life 3, this is what should be on the market. Hire this dude!

  • Neat stuff. I wish they had demo'd something like L4D instead of that unfinished Half-Life 2 series.
  • The ignorance on this thread is astounding. I've tried the Oculus - I'm buying that *** day one. It's amazing, and the demo I tried wasn't even the full product. It didn't have a lean function and the screens were low res.

    This already looks miles better.

And for everyone saying whole room projection - that's stupid. There are too many factors that will ruin that experience - sunlight, corners, objects, noises, other people/pets, wall paint/paper etc. You put on this headset and no one knows what you're doing. You can be in the same room as people watching a movie and not bother/be bothered.

You do not need a large space - you walk back and forth with triggers. The only space you need is to move your head around.

The implications for this go so far beyond gaming - this is like the start of Ready Player One. Imagine a home screen in Windows with this tech, where you can move things around a-la Minority Report. Browsing the Internet alone would be revolutionary - completely lost in your own world, as far as you can see (and you can choose any depth-of-field live wallpaper) with absolutely no one to intrude on it or bother you. I cannot wait until this thing is commercially released.
  • You can do that already on PS3 with Killzone 3 and the Move, with perfect accuracy, even online. The lack of care most people had for it doesn't give me any hope for this idea, considering it's easier on PS3 in that you don't have to move your head and body around (and stand up). That could get pretty dizzying pretty quickly. Or painful, depending on how young your neck and brain are.

I just don't understand how idiotic or ignorant these people are that continue to attempt to develop VR headsets. If anything, the future is in whole room projection-type of tech or holographic-type tech, if the screen ever dies. There isn't a single asepct of VR headset gaming that attracts me. Screen half an inch from face? No. Jerking head and neck around for multiple hours at a time while possibly breaking all items in room? No. Not being able to see anything else in room while flailing around? No. Is it still the 80s in these morons' minds?
  • God it's so funny reading the comments from people who are clueless about this kind of tech. Calling it pointless,... calling it unnecessary,.... They have no freaking clue what this is going to be changing. They'd rather lie on their backs on a couch twiddling their fingers while they argue with their room mate than be transported to a different world.
  • this kind of tech is the future, mark my words, in the next couple of decades we wont need controllers or keyboards we will just throw on our headsets and go into the game! Can't wait!! PS, VALVE HURRY UP WITH HALF LIFE 3 ALREADY!!
  • Pretty cool!

  • I duct taped a TV to my head and swung it around violently.

Pretty much the same thing right?

  • this is nice...but walking random in a huge room...

  • Honestly, I'm impressed with the implications that this technology represents. If it can attract the interest that it apparently deserves, the finances will inevitably fall in place and industries other than computers and gaming will eventually benefit. I for one will be keeping my fingers and toes crossed. Good luck Mr. Andrews.
