Brownie Brown Levels Up And Becomes 1-Up Studio

by Ben Reeves on Feb 01, 2013 at 02:31 PM

We think that Brownie Brown is kind of a weird name for a game developer. Nintendo must think so too, because the developer of Super Mario 3D Land has just changed it's name to 1-Up Studio.

A group of former Square employees founded Brownie Brown back in 2000 and quickly started churning out RPGs like Sword of Mana, Magical Starsign, and Heroes of Mana for for Nintendo's handhelds. According to the company, it chose the name Brownie Brown because a brownie is a hard working elf, and the elf on their old logo was named Brown.

The company's website now states that after working more closely with it's parent company Nintendo on Super Mario 3D, the developer underwent a change in internal structure and decided to rebrand itself as 1-Up Studio.

1-Up is currently co-developing an RPG for the 3DS called Fantasy Life with developer Level-5.
