Madden Gets Release Date And Possible Name Change

Players will be able to take to the gridiron in Electronic Arts’ popular Madden series on August 27 of this year.

An image posted on the EA website hints that the title may feature a new name to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary. EA usually titles its sports series with the last two numbers in a year, or the whole year, but the image on the site suggests that “Madden: 25 Years” could be the new title.

  • I stopped playing football games after 2K died
  • The word "snore" comes to mind. Honestly not a big football fan nor am I a fan of yearly releases of sports games. Its mostly just roster updates with minor game tweaks if any. Why not just DLC new teams? They'd still make money and it'd give them more time to actually IMPROVE on the franchise's next entry. But thats just me.
  • They should include a mode similar to NBA 2K13's where you can play as Jim Brown, Dan Marino, and other classic players.
  • Better go big EA, although I doubt it. At the least put in Mark Sanchez's butt fumble as a play.
  • That's a misleading headline. I thought they were replacing the name "Madden". That would have been surprising, and it's the only reason I read the article. "25 Years" isn't a name change. It's just a different subtitle. It's not like next year they're going to call it "Madden: 25 Years part 2", or "Madden 25 Years '15". This is like saying that Gear of War is getting a name change because the next one has the subtitle "Judgement", instead of just being "Gears of War 4".

I don't know if that was intentionally misleading, but if it was, I wouldn't make a habit of it. One thing I've always appreciated about GIO's reporters is that they don't use misleading headlines or tricks to drum up hits like a lot of other websites. Nobody likes the reporter who tries to create facts from nothing. They'll just end up thinking you're dishonest, and you'll lose credibility.
  • I Love Madden, Madden 13 was perhaps one of the best football games out there. so it's another august date before the regular season begins. better save up some pennies for madden cards again. Ps. GO RAVENS!!!!!!!! just sayin
  • It'll be Madden 14 with a little 25 years celebration thing. That's what they did with 20 years, that's what they'll do with 25.

  • Madden made some pretty nice changes, so I believe I'll be picking this one up. TBH the last football game I bought was NFL 2K5... I used to love the old NFL Gamebreaker games though.

  • I, after years and years of not buying Madden, decided to buy Madden 12. I still to this day kick myself over it! But i will not be fooled again into buying one of these horrible games.

  • Please drop the Madden name. He has nothing to do with it anymore. Just call it 'EA Roster Update 2014'
  • :)

  • Madden: 25 Years? Not vey appealing...

  • Madden 06 was probably the best of the franchise in terms of overall playability and captivation. Featuring an outstanding league roster, great controls, nice soundtrack and newer style of campaign. EA didn't really work on controls in the newest additions as you've probably noticed. Instead, enhancing the graphics and theatrics was more important. In my opinion the franchise doesn't need a new name, it needs a new game.
  • I really like NFL and thus Madden is an obvious choice for my NFL game (get it every year), but I think if they are going this route for this year's edition, they better go big or go home. However, if 2K could ever somehow get the license again, I would switch in a heartbeat. RIP NFL2K5

  • Name change? >:

  • I might consider buying this game for my future Wii U sometime after it gets released. I've been wanting to get into Madden, but I skipped Madden NFL 13. For the name, I think it should be called Madden NFL '14: 25 Years. That seems like it would work nicely.
