Capcom Says There is a Possibility of a Resident Evil Series Reboot

Capcom, developer of the classic zombie-shooter Resident Evil, has stated there is a probability of a reboot of the franchise.

In an interview Eurogamer, Resident Evil: Revelations producer Masachika Kawata discusses possible components of an all-new reboot to the series.

“If we did [go with an open-world], we would want to preserve what Resident Evil is and what makes it appealing to fans, while also making it accessible to new players. It would almost entail having a slight reboot to get the series into a place where it would work with open-world gameplay. That's just a personal opinion,” Kawata says . "A lot of decisions would have to be taken before something like that is done to the series, but it is something that…there is a possibility."

Capcom is currently working on bringing the 3DS game, Resident Evil: Revelations, to consoles. Kawata explains sales were decent for 3DS games at the time of release, but Capcom wanted a little more. With the possibility of a reboot of the 17-year old series, Kawata mentions a future prospect for the series as a whole. "Moving forward, I can see us focusing even more on the horror aspect and fear in the series, and see us making something scarier than we have already."

Before you start dreaming about what the next Resident Evil might entail, however, Kawata hopes you'll give his latest work a chance. "If anyone is waiting for an open-world Resident Evil, I think it will certainly be quite a while," Kawata says. "So in the meantime, I recommend giving Revelations a try."

  • I Don't know how i feel about this..
  • A reboot would be nice, but hell, they could just re-make RE 1-3 and I'm sure they'd please quite a few fans!
  • Capcom, you messed with Dante. You know, whatever. But if you screw around with Leon... I swear... *shudders*
  • Hmm, sounds like it could be cool. It is Resident Evil, after all. =P
  • Please REboot it back to it's origins.
  • RE6 was probably the worst game I've played in 2012. Not sure where they are going with this series, because it felt more like a quick time event simulator than a video game...
  • They don't need to go open world, linearity is fine as long as it's handled well. I do agree though that the series needs a reboot, the whole thing's gotten a bit clunky and bloated in more ways than one.

  • I still like Resident Evil, yes I really enjoyed RE6, but what I just read was that they're thinking about making another Outbreak game, which I've been wanting for many years now. It might take a while for it to happen but in the mean time, RE2 remake?
  • If they rebooted DmC and it worked, maybe this is what this series needs to be successful again.
  • Wow. When it said reboot I thought they meant maybe turning it back into a survival horror game...not a sandbox shooter.
  • DO IT! The newest Resident Evil games have been.... disappointing to say the least. Give this series a much needed reboot and try again. Get back to what made the games great. To hell with this action movie set up.

    BRING BACK THE HORROR

  • I'm not one of the RE6 haters, but before we get a reboot I would like to see a few questions answered.
  • the series doesn't need a reboot, just needs some tweaking. Am I the only RE fan that liked 6? That game was not that bad seriously. I'll admit there was a lot of QTE, but every freaking game on the market has that now. It's expected. The 4th one had a lot of QTE, yet I hear no one complaining about that installment.
  • Guys did you read this part : "Moving forward, I can see us focusing even more on the HORROR ASPECT and FEAR in the series, and see us making something scarier than we have already."

That is what I am most excited for, back to being scary like it should be.

  • This makes me kind of mad.

  • 6 was, no lie, one of the worst games I've ever played. It was so horrid - everything from the story, to the dialog, to the controls and camera... it was just horrendous. I will not buy another RE title unless/until Capcom brings it back to its survival horror roots, or at least to the RE4 days.
  • Moving forward, I can see us focusing even more on the horror aspect and fear in the series, and see us making something scarier than we have already

When was the last time RE even was scary? Because I don't remember.

  • Very interesting. I am intrigued
