Gabe Newell Is More Concerned About Apple Than Consoles

Gabe Newell recently gave a talk at the University of Texas' LBJ School of Public Affairs where he talked about Valve's biggest competitor.

Notes on Newell's talk comes from Polygon where he had a lot to say about the coming battle over the living room. Newell said, "I think that there's a scenario where we see sort of a dumbed down living room platform emerging — I think Apple rolls the console guys really easily. The question is can we make enough progress in the PC space to establish ourselves there, and also figure out better ways of addressing mobile before Apple takes over the living room?"

Newell also said that he expects a lot of products to show up soon that will bridge the gap between the living room and the PC, but Valve will be happy to join the fray. His biggest fear, however, is that Apple will beat them to the punch, which will hurt the PC to living room transition in the long run.

  • Apple beating out Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and beating Valve to the console space? I am highly doubtful.
  • If Apple does release a gaming system of sorts for the TV I bet it will feature games similar to those on the Ooya.  I won't be interested but my parents might be, lol.

  • Gabe Newell is afraid of apple.... wow
  • Will it be overpriced too?
  • I think there will always be a market for stronger consoles with a more "hardcore" (I hate using that word but it is what it is) focus but Apple joining the console fray would definitely hurt the market. Like it or not Apple appeals to the casual tech user which will pull sales from other console manufacturers.

As much as I despise the godlike worship Newell draws from gamers there's no denying he has a good grasp of where the industry is at.
  • I don't know, aren't the objectives of console companies and Apple different? I understand Apple and Microsoft, who seemed to have been trying to "casualize" PC and make a dent in mobile. Plus, with how Xbox has become over the years, I think Microsoft wants the consumer to spend more time on the couch then in front of the TV.

I just see this as more an Apple vs. Microft and maybe Sony. Nintendo seems to be too much in their own world to even give a dam about Apple, lol.
  • If any company has the chance to out-innovate Apple, I hope it is Valve. Sometimes I feel like Gabe Newell has a greater vision than just gaming.
  • Would people pay for Apple's overpriced hardware over whatever Valve would make, though?
  • The more news I hear from Gaben, the more I despise this guy. He went from being my greatest hero to a lowlife of the game scene (we know Steam, but we barely hear from Valve games anymore).

Worried about the PC? I am Why knock it off with Steambox? Afraid of losing the mine of gold?

Living Room will always be there. Mobile is just another part of the life. How do you think SNES and GameBoy managed to coexist? Maybe he is worried Steam service is not good anymore, which I greatly disagree.
  • Apple entering the console market would be Atari all over again. Just compare the App store to the situation in the early 80s...too many games, no quality controls, most good games getting lost in the mountain of crap they're competing with, and games being sold for way too low of a price, or now even being given away for free. The only major difference is retail vs digital distribution.
  • Apple has some good quality merchandise, but it is all over priced. Any sort of living room console from Apple would easily cost over $1000.
  • I just lot a bit of respect for mr. Newell... Apple? God... I prefer giving my money to the Ouya...

  • I still think there is a strong possibility that Apple will enter the living room. They already have Apple TV for just $100. All they need to do is add the app store and a controller and they're off to the races. Charge $200 or $300.

  • Ha! Have you seen there recent products? Iphone 5, Ipad Mini, and the new Ipods? I don't see Apple going anywhere fast in the innovation department. Rest easy Gabe (and go back to learning what comes after 2).
  • MAC isn't a threat, because it has close to no games. In fact, they only had a few starwars games. Until Steam released for MAC, it has hardly been used.

  • I use a mac. I played Borderlands, Borderlands 2. Close to max settings. It was very nice, until I realized there really are no games for mac. I partitioned it, of course, so that helped. But I really don't see this being a plausible threat. I would prefer to stick with Sony rather than buy an apple console.

  • Lol Gaben.

  • over priced Apple crap has no games worth anything.....Oh wait it has no games at all never mind.
  • First off, Apple already tried and failed to do that in a rather spectacular fashion on multiple occasions. Second, why in the world Gabe is worried about a hardware manufacture that most PC gamers loathe and that pumps out outdated, over priced technology in a shiny package is beyond me.
  • don't worry gabe , it'll be so overpriced all you'd have to do is undercut them.
