Adam Sessler Sets Fox News Straight

The former host of X-Play gives an excellent take on the role of video game violence on social ills live on Fox News in this must-watch YouTube clip.

Sessler brings up excellent points about the long history of concerned groups seeking censorship of every form of media from opera to comic books. Seeing a figure knowledgeable about the medium speak coherently about video games and violence without falling into any traps about "murder simulators" or similar is a breath of fresh air, to say the least.

Who should Sessler debate next? [UPDATE: Lamar Alexander, perhaps?]

  • I personally feel games like Battlefield are preparing me for when Russian and China invade, disguised as the U.N. That is, of course, after Obama and his 5th columnist cronies disarm the republic. That's just me, though...

  • Well spoke sir!! And Fox was probably the best place to do that too.

  • he killed by mentioning comic books and the opera. That man know s how to debate!

  • That discussion was calm and respectable from both sides. I honestly did not expect that. Good job Sessler.

  • Sessler did great! Hopefully this can silence some of those crazy politicians.

  • Adam Sessler did a great job but i think  Ben Reeves need to be interviewed  next

  • Why cant we have more representation of video games and the people who both work in and endorse the industry like this. Instead.....we get stuff like Noobz. Its amazing that we got to see this on fox news none the less. Well done sir. Well done indeed.

  • So eloquently worded, great job defending games as a whole. Love the GTA example as defense for the ratings system.

  • Adam lookin' tough rock'n the beard.

  • Adam is the voice of video gamers now to spread the word, I been saying it for a while on GIO parents need to stop giving spoil little whiny kids rated T and M if they cannot handle it really isn't that hard to tell them no is no.

  • Way to go Sess!

  • I want them to do a longer debate with Sessler and others. Make it an hour long special or something. He did throw in some valid points, but in 4 minutes everything cannot be answered. He did do a fantastic job in the time alloted though.

  • Adam Sessler is awesome. Nuff said.

  • Alot of nonsense from a drunk. He should think about the kids.

  • I personally think that video games are one of the only mediums in which you can actually act out horrifically violent acts. Some games, that weight towards realism (because I think fantasy like killing monsters, doesn't register the same in our minds) and allow you to steal cars, sell drugs, reenact war, kill people, play the 'badass' etc are putting us, as gamers, into situations where we take the role of some truly despicable human beings. Often without ever seeing a real world reaction to that behavior... this, can affect us no matter what we say or to what most of us would care to admit. How exactly is it affecting us is the question! Who are the people attracted to these types of games? What can be done about it, do we even have a right to do anything about it? Myself, I personally think general attitude and aggression can increase as a general blanket statement for most of us. How I feel after playing something like Ni No Kuni vs. say Battlefield is very different (and personally, I tend towards the feeling NI No Kuni gives me) and I'm quite sure our view of society can be skewed with some of this stuff rattling around in our heads. But, like most things in the world, nothing is black and white, we live in a gray grey world. But, what people care about the most, are violent horrible acts... and they try to see if video games are leading to that. So shifting focus to the end of the spectrum to those who do these horrible horrible things. They do not account for 99% of the gamers out there, sure games can have a variety of affects on us but, thankfully most of us (even the worst of us) have the ability to know that these things are very wrong in the 'real world'. The ones however who do, chances are they have very severe mental conditions. They don't have the same switches in their heads like most of us, and therefore.... bad things happen. Reflecting back on my first point, these people probably shouldn't play games where they can act out such horrific scenarios... and yeah maybe, games are fuel on a fire that's already burning. But the problem isn't the game, censorship is not a good answer, we can't punish a society based on the actions of a few. Is there a good answer? Well I have my opinions but, I will keep them to myself for now.
  • Awesome.  One of the best pundits this industry has, as far as I'm concerned.

  • Sessler is the man. Way to explain it how it is. The problem in this country is not games or guns but a mental health issue. Fox News is a bunch of bias *** bags trying to push their political agenda

  • Props to this reporter for letting Adam express his point of view without trying to censor him or cut him off (as other Fox News reporters have done to those trying to defend video games in the past).

Adam makes some great points, it seems kind of silly to blame game developers for "influencing" young children with violent video games when there are clearly a lot of barriers in place to show that violent games are not meant for children (just as R-rated movies aren't).
