Reader Discussion: What’s Your Take On Microtransactions In Dead Space 3?

A PlayStation Store update revealed pricing for Dead Space 3 microtransactions, and it’s caused a bit of a stir within the gaming community. Purchasing all of the optional content sets players back $41 – with used gamers having to pay $9.99 for an online pass.

The series’ first installment also featured microtransactions for things such as weapon packs, so Dead Space 3 isn’t adventuring into new territory. The trend isn’t going away, and there are those who are on both sides of the debate as to whether or not it’s a good idea to charge for such items.

What’s your take on microtransactions in Dead Space 3? Will you purchase and download the content to enrich your experience, or are you against purchasing extra items like horse armor, extra player levels in role-playing games, and now Dead Space 3 guns and bot personalities?

  • To me, it's the exact same thing as the microtransactions in ME3. It's no big deal.
  • This is another attack on used gaming...
  • I really love new, additional content. The other part of me wishes that they would go back to the old school expansion pack model as opposed to micro transactions. I know some companies still do the expansions; I get that. I'm just not keen on micro transactions. But to each, their own!
  • DEATH OF THE INDUSTRY!!

Well, that may be a little over dramatic but I don't agree with the trend of nickel and diming gamers. But unfortunately the unlocking of game content through playing seems to be getting lessened the farther into this generation we go.
  • If it's optional, which it is, I don't care. Somebody out there will like being able to buy all those extra things, so more power to them, it's not my place to say they shouldn't have that.

  • First, I do not have Internet over where I live. So I can not play any of the Mass Effect always on DLC(Mass Effect 2&3). Second, if this was done to attract the mobile market they should have released a spin off on their mobile console. If EA wants this game to sell, they should let Visceral impart their vision for them. I wonder if we have to pay for our health and ammo with cash because they removed in-game credits.
  • If EA wants them in the game then they can put them in the game.  I'm not particular happy about it, but it doesn't mean I have to buy anything.

  • Mod
I think microtransactions are fine so long as it doesn't change the experience for those not taking advantage of them, i.e. if the gameplay is not more challenging or less compelling because they didn't pay extra for certain items/weapons/gear.
  • Meh, as long as it is not a vital component of the game I'm fine with micro transactions. For example, if this were Devil May Cry and they gave you Ivory but were charging for Ebony that would be silly. However, paying for a classic character skin not so much.
  • I think they've struck a good balance in ME3's multiplayer. As long as they stay close to that model, I have no problem with microtransactions being in Dead Space 3.
  • I have Dead Space 1 and 2. This is the reason i will not be getting 3. I haven't played my PS3 for months simply because everytime i turn it on anymore all i see is SEASON PASS or DAY 1 DLC or MAP PACKS or NEW GUNS/SKINS PACK. I am sick of it. So i got a 3DS and have been going on Amazon and buying up all the old DS games i havent played. I am in love with gaming again. At least Chrono Trigger is complete.
  • No big deal, they are also in the first two Dead Space games. You don't need to buy that stuff, anyway.

  • Not a big deal...they were there before...what I care about is that I don't have the game yet. :P
  • As long as they don't take out any elements that make Dead Space what it is - and I'm not only talking core elements - I am totally fine with them. They're optional. I'll soon forget that they exist. Many forget that they've been there before, too.

What did cause me to cancel my pre-order though is the lack of love for the PC platform. A straight port and moronic reasons mentioned trying to defend the decision are not worth my money. Especially not if this game appears to be a tad more expensive than usual.

It's very sad since I love Dead Space and Dead Space 2. I'll probably check out Dead Space 3 when the price drops by at least 50% because that's what we're getting. A half-assed PC game. It hurts to write this.
  • Yeah I have no problem with this. Extra content is always welcome. Of course I will be making sure I love this game before investing more money into it. All in all it should be a fun addition to a potetentially great game.

  • I don't mind microtransactions.

  • I'm pretty sure Dead Space 1 and 2 had weapon packs like this as well.

  • Between this and the Day 1 STORY DLC. I will not be picking this one up. I'll just watch a Let's Play.
  • It didn't bother me in the first Dead Space (which is a PHENOMENAL game and the best in the franchise so far), so it's not going to bother me in this game at all.

  • They're there as an option.  The game can still be enjoyed in its fullest without paying these micro transactions.
