Nearly 3,000 Players Participated In One EVE Online Battle

Recently, there was a massive battle in EVE Online that featured over 2,800 players duking it out in space with their space ships. Thankfully someone grabbed a few screens of the absurd spectacle.

The politics and factions of EVE Online are as difficult to follow as those in the real-world, so it's hard to pinpoint exactly what happened to set off this massive battle. You can head here to see some more images of the battle, and a video below that shows a little bit of the battle in motion.

  • That is quite awesome.
  • This is amazing!! Very cool!

  • I wish Halo 4 battles could be this big.
  • That looks like something they would project at a pink floyd concert
  • Once you get some of those clans going in EVE, they get angry, I wonder how it ended?
  • That's really quite cool.

  • If an Eve player would be kind enough to tell us what is happening here, you can comment here. I will edit my post to say whatever it is you have said.

    They explain it here.
  • I was online, but chose to stay away. Some guy kept a live stream on, and asked for ISK to keep it on (I love this game), and made over a billion Isk from streaming alone.

The battle stemmed out of drama, really. CFC (Clusterfuck Coalition) droped in with a capital ship, and things escalated quickly into this historical battle of behemoths (the most capital ships in one battle, ever - but not the most capital ship losses). It took MANY hours. In the first few hours, supercarriers, titans and dreadnoughts were lost. The Goons are clearly defeated. PL (Pandemic Legion) did good, but lost 3 Nyx capitals.

Somebody told me there was a secondary battle over the wreackage. People flocked into the system on their salvage ships to try and make a buck from what's left.

Many billions of ISK were lost. For those readers who've never played Eve, a single supercarrier worth 80+ billions ISK equals roughly ~1500 USD. It's insane.

    *EDIT*
A quick note to people unfamiliar with Eve: a capital ship costs billions and takes a VERY long time, and LOTS of resources (minerals, components, research etc) to build. The average player will never get close to one of these. In fact, most people never see them because they choose to stay safe in high security, "empire" space (the four NPC factions). Even those who venture into low sec or null sec (or w-space - too complicated to explain in a few words, but the universe is vast and most of it is open to exploration and seldom [or never before] visited by players) will probably not see one of these for weeks, maybe months. Capitals are prized for their size and capabilities, and Alliances (player-run alliances - many different corporations aligned under one banner) are often huge and resourceful (and own sovereignty in space). This was a historical battle.

Most player, end-game players with skills and resources, will stick to sub-capital ships (for plenty of good reasons). It's a complex game. Too much like real life, sometimes.
  • One day all online games will look like this only better. Destructive environments, slick animations and a map that rivals the biggest GTA game. It doesn't seem like much of a dream when I look at this and Planetside 2.
  • I wish an mmo like WoW or GW2 could have this...
  • awesome. always was intimidated by eve, even after playing the 14 day trial.. so much to learn. do you have to buy like every expansion up to current to play properly?
  • I wish I could play this for free. I really want to try it out, but I'm too cheap to pay for it.
  • I wish I had the balls to play this game.

  • That looks like a cluster**** if I have ever seen one.

  • Here is a good description from a guy on Reddit. "Pretend EVE is real life and whole cities can teleport. The reddit alliance is pretending to be north america in this example and something awful goons will be Europe. These two superpowers have been somewhat friends for 3 years, but relationships are getting strained. Also, some people just want to fight because they're bored. They've been arguing with each other for a few days now, and the guy controlling Paris (a single EVE ship, but one of the most powerful ones) last night hit the wrong button. He teleported the city of Paris into Canada (Pandemic in my example) but forgot to teleport all the suburbs (ships) around the city, stranding it. Canada ganged up on Paris instantly and called in the US (TEST in my example) to help. So basically the US and Canada obliterated Paris. Europe sent in reinforcements but without a good strategy against an already prepared North America they were also crushed. Europe is now without 3 major cities and 10 or so minor ones. They still have plenty of resources left, but it was a great first strike. Especially since North America pretty much lost nothing."
  • I can't believe Eve is doing so well. I tried a trial of the game a while ago and I must say it was the most confusing and odd game I ever played. It's hard for most people to get past that initial reaction and really get into the game (I'm assuming most people had the same first reaction).
  • That's awesome!

  • Thats epic!! Very cool!!

  • Not enough lazers!

  • This is what they call a good ol' fashioned cluster duck.
