Layoffs At PlayStation All-Stars Developer

SuperBot Entertainment, the studio behind the Sony-themed fighting game PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, was hit by a round of layoffs today.

In a statement to IGN, Sony confirmed the news, saying in part: "SCEA can confirm that SuperBot Entertainment did make a reduction in their workforce today. The studio and SCEA remain committed to supporting PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale post launch, including developing the title’s forthcoming DLC releases in the coming months.”

PlayStation All-Stars generally received average reviews (Game Informer included), which probably has something to do with the current state of affairs at SuperBot.

With that and the whole THQ business, this week has not been good. Our best wishes to those affected by the layoffs.

  • Sucks about the layoffs. I wonder how well the game was actually received by consumers though, and whether or not that had anything to do with it. I still have no personal interest in trying that game. Sony just doesn't have enough IPs to make it worthwhile, and worse yet they didn't use half of their old ones!? That's the entire point to games like these. Even if they don't own the characters, they should have gone above and beyond to get everyone the PS1-PS2 was known for into this game. If Smash Bros. can get Sonic and Solid Snake, anything is possible.
I would have liked to see Crash, Spyro, Gex, Robbit and maybe some Resident Evil or Dino Crisis characters in there just to name a few. Who the hell is Fat Princess and why should that make me want to play? Just so much lost potential...
  • I played All Stars on at my cousins house, both on his Vita and his PS3. I got to say it's a fun game, especially when you have four people playing on a huge projector.

  • I am sorry to hear about those that lost their jobs. The gameplay itself was pretty good, its just that the presentation was incredibly barebones.
  • That sucks. :\ I actually really liked the game. It wasn't perfect, but it was still really fun.

  • This is an amazing game that my friends and I have been playing for weeks in to the early hours of the morning. Best time we've had playing games together in awhile. I'm really saddened to hear this.

  • take that you pathetic roster developing cheap asses
  • To be honest, I think that superbot did such a lazy job making this game. But I hope they don't end up like THQ.
  • Oh well. hope they find work.

  • So it's not because the game did not sell well, it's because of average reviews. LMAO

  • Huh. I really liked PSABR and I thought that it was a very well-done game. Even if Superbot did gimp out somewhat on the roster (who asked for Fat Princess?!), the gameplay was certainly solid and it was fun to experiment with the characters. Best of luck to those laid off.

  • Hmm, I wonder why...

  • not surprised, games a blatant ripoff of SSB....always hoped it would fail in some sort of a capacity
  • .
  • I really don't see what all the hate for this game came from. That it's a SSB clone? Who cares, people say that like SSB is a bad game or something. Sure the combat is a bit clunky and the roster was average at best, it was far from a bad game. Hope those guys find work, they seem like they had a lot of potential to offer.

  • This sucks. I loved this game. Its a shame it didn't get more positive reviews. Probably because busters like Ben Reeves, Tim Turi and that loser Dan Ryckert are too busy with copies of Smash Bros lodged in their butt holes to give this great game the respect it deserves.
  • lol

  • Too bad. I look forward to trying it out for myself anyhows.
  • its too bad really. The game is pretty fun. I wonder what it sold like

  • Is it just me, or does Sony make a lot of their games have DLC that costs over $100. White Knight Chronicles costs like over $300, and some others cost over $200. Luckily the DLC isn't needed much. Anyways, the game was OK, but some stuff I didn't care for.
