Anti-Game Lawmaker Says Gamers Don't Have Credibility

Leland Yee, who authored the anti-game legislation in California that was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2011, says gamers aren't qualified to weigh in on the debate about violent games.

Speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle, Yee said "Gamers have just got to quiet down. Gamers have no credibility in this argument."

So, there you have it! All of us gamers had better shut our mouths and let the experts (like Yee) just handle this whole controversial subject for us.

  • I don't think that word means what he thinks it means.
  • Geez what an A-Hole.
  • If people who enjoy videogames aren't credible, why are people who don't like video games?
  • If we're the one being made "violent" by games, shouldn't we be the most credible? Oh no wait, we're so violent, so we can't be credible!
  • SMH, We have no say? Yeah okay

  • So a video game hater has more credibility regarding this subject than the actual gamers?
  • So the people that know nothing about games should handle this with no input from people that actually know about games?
  • But who would stand up for video games if not gamers?
  • Huh, deja vu. I guess this is like when the old white legislatures try to put restrictions on contraceptives and planned parenthood. Cause you know, what would women know about those things. Or even with SOPA, a bunch of ignorant group of people making decisions effecting all of us, that they have no idea what they are even about.
  • hmm i bet they have credibility to vote your sorry ass out of office, and im sure thats the only thing that he cares about, gamer or not
  • Lawmakers have just got to quiet down. Lawmakers have no credibility in any argument.
  • Politicians aren't allowed to make decisions upon our rights. They have no credibility. See, the same could go for them. Not trying to get into politics, but most of them have history of crime.
  • Well it would make sense for him to say something like that because if our opinion mattered, this issue would have been settled ALONG time ago. He doesnt understand that its up to the parents to monitor what their kids play and purchase. My son is 7 and he watches movies and plays games that are age appropriate. That is apart of being a responsible parent. I've seen parents in the gamestop buying their 11 tr old kids games like GTA and Resident Evil, even though the store employees are voicing their concerns about how much gore and adult material is in the game. Said parent just knods and says "Its ok".Now what their kids play outside of their homes is a different story, but you have to show your kids that thats not tolerated in the home.
  • Just pointing this out. Whenever a democrat doesn't agree with the media they don't mention the party but if this was a Republican the party would be mention in the article. I don't know why, but that's what I have seen.
  • And this is based on what, exactly?
  • So he's basically a five year old saying " I didn't get what I want, so everyone else has to suffer." Sounds like a really nice guy. If anyone needs to stay out of this argument, it's people like him who don't appreciate games like we do.
  • Also mentioned in the interview: drivers have no credibility in the debate about car safety, and politicians have no credibility in the election process.  Oh wait, I read that wrong, it actually reads like this:  politicians have no credibility.

  • Here's Yee's entire quote: "Gamers have got to just quiet down. Gamers have no credibility in this argument. This is all about their lust for violence and the industry's lust for money. This is a billion-dollar industry. This is about their self-interest." Thank you for informing me of my apparent bloodlust, Mr. Yee. Excuse me while I go stab my roommates for giggles, because that's apparently a normal day for me. You should know. After all, you have more credibility than me!
  • Eh even I think gamers themselves aren't really good investigators to violence studies: that's better off to epidemiologists and health behavior analysts.

  • That guy should really listen to the gamer population before saying crap like that on assumption that we don't know what we're talking about, because not all gamers play games that involve violence or killing.
