Sony Europe Gets Fined For 2011 PSN Hacking
The infamous global PlayStation Network breach that took place in 2011 is still living on for Sony. Today Sony Computer Entertainment Europe was fined £250,000 by the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
According to ICO, Sony is accountable for putting its users at risk because they failed to make sure the network was secure enough. The ICO further confirmed that if Sony’s software was up-to-date the entire hack could have been prevented, but does acknowledge that Sony was maliciously targeted.
“If you are responsible for so many payment card details and log-in details then keeping that personal data secure has to be your priority. In this case that just didn’t happen, and when the database was targeted – albeit in a determined criminal attack – the security measures in place were simply not good enough," says deputy commissioner and director of data protection, David Smith.
Although, no proof exists to show that credit card details or personal data was accessed for fraudulent use, it’s still the risk that made the ICO decide on the fine.
