MaleShep's Voice Actor Wins Edmontonian Of The Year Award

As the voice of the male Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect trilogy, Mark Meer has already saved the universe. If that's not enough, the voiceover artist has now picked up the prestigious Edmontonian of the Year Award.

You can see a brief interview with Meer over here, where he briefly talks about the award and some of the competition he was up against. Meer credits his win on the enthusiasm that gamers have for voting in online polls.

In addition to providing voices for the Mass Effect series, Meer has worked on games including Dragon Age: Origins and Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. He's also a cast member on Super Channel's Tiny Plastic Men in Canada, which is where the image above is from.

  • [insert comment about how Mass Effect 3 sucked]

This actor was good, but not my pick for the year personally. James McAffrey was my pick, love him as Max Payne.

Edit: I read through this too fast and didn't realize it was for people in the city of Edmonton. Apologies for my idiocy, and thanks to Pauleragon for clarifying it for me.

  • Am I the only one who has never heard of this award before?
  • ... Mark Meer? I like him, but I hear the fem shep is infinitely better.
  • It took me a few seconds to realize that "MaleShep" meant...well, the male Shepard.

  • Meer is an actual actor? I thought he was just some guy they picked up off the street because they couldn't afford anything better after hiring Jennifer Hale:P
  • Edmonton was green in Blades of Steel, if I recall.

Even living in Canada, that's all I know about the place.

  • Male Shep?! Are you KIDDING me! Fem Shep's voice actress was infinitely better! I found his voice generic and dull. :\
  • Well good for him.

  • He doesn't look like I thought he would, but I guess it would be weird if he looked like my Shepard

  • *raises Flame Shield* Always preferred Maleshep personally. Femshep was great too, but I felt like Hale overdid it sometimes. For example, her Jacob romance scenes. Cringe worthy imo
  • Mark Meer always does a great job, but Michael Beattie (Mordin Solus) was leagues ahead of both Mark and Jennifer. Actually, I consider him to be voice actor of the year, in any category. His performance in Mass Effect 2 was one of the best I've ever heard.
  • Thanks for the clarification, Jeff. Was confused about the above image for at first. (lol) What about Femshep?!
  • Well deserved. He is the real and only Commander Shepard.
  • I could not place what role he had in DA. Damn it's been a long time since I played that game.

I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my favorite award on the Citadel.
  • I don't think the users here understand that this award is not specific to video games or voice acting but is a local award that encompasses many sectors and professions. So comparing his voice acting skills is a legitimate topic of discussion but not at all relevant to the original post unless there are other comparable voice actors from Edmonton.
  • I've never heard of this award, but I thought female Shepard was better.

  • THAT is how Mark Meer looks? I'm referring to the picture on the main page, BTW.
  • He's one of the worst voice actors this generation and he wins an award. Fine I'll deal with that.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend his fans with the exaggeration. I actually had to switch over to femshep in ME2 because he took me out of the experience....and yes I am full of myself but that has nothing to do with my opinion on his talents as VA.
  • I'm not sure why, but something about Mark Meer's Shepard kind of annoyed me. He's still a really good voice actor, just inconsistent at times.
  • Cool.
