Activision Blizzard Bringing Next-Generation Rendering Talk To GDC

Attendees of this year's Game Developers Conference are going to get a look at Activision Blizzard's next-generation technology in a talk called "Photorealistic Eyes Rendering and Deformation." Activision's Jorge Jimenez will lead the talk and tells GDC that his presentation "will show high-quality next-generation shading driven with a plausible game rig." He also says Activision is tying to overcome the uncanny valley with its new tech.

The image above is taken from Jimenez's blog, which is actually from an "Advances in Real-Time Rendering" course he gave at SIGGRAPH last year. We'll have to wait until Game Developers Conference hits in late-March to see how far his team has come. GDC has not announced a date or time for Jimenez's talk.

  • I certainly can't wait to see what all these people will have to show at the GDC. Granted, I've never been particularly impressed by anything shown there in the past few years, but if this year really is the beginning of the next gen, then I'm sure it will be more interesting than usual.
  • So now when we're headshotting people in COD, they'll look more real! The teabagging industry alone will explode!
  • Impressive.

  • I'm pretty sure next-gen consoles will not be able to render that kind of detail(above picture) in real-time except maybe in cut-scenes.
  • Who cares. Show me physics. Show me smart AI.
  • should be very interesting. although to be honest, I'm probably at the point in my gaming career where its gonna take more than just a pretty face to really get me going. Give me something great to play, and I couldn't really care how detailed someone's face is.
  • Sooner or later, games will just turn into Sword Art Online and be VR.

  • Let's face it. Almost everyone who makes games want's them playable on consoles to reach the widest audience possible. So games have been held back by the ancient tech for years. Very few PC only games made with high end specs in mind. We haven't even scratched the surface of what, tech that already exists, can do. Now that the new consoles are coming out, i can't wait to see what games can be like made for modern pc tech.
  • Sweeeet. Can't wait to see what the future holds for gaming :)

  • Never really cared much for flashy graphics in videogames. Not that I don't appreciate it, but I have a friend who is a 3d sculpter, so I already know where this is going... If developers want to impress, do so with content. There is a reason indie developers are becoming, at times, much more successful than considerably large, respectful studios. I am not saying this is always the case, and we have seen our share of shady "indies" out there, but many of them are honest about their work and while not capable of competing in the graphics department, are perfectly able to dazzle us with quality content. To sum up in one line: I'd rather see more content.
  • Holy ***. Then Cowadoody might actually change?
  • Here comes the Console hate already, I can already see the comment section filled with PC elitists bashing on things that aren't even out yet. XD.
  • I want images of the consoles first and prices :/
  • Graphics are only as good as what you use them on. If its just going to be used for more "realistic" greys and browns on a boringly real environments instead of creative settings then I don't care.
  • Eyes are so crucial. I feel like they're the next big step in getting to the Uncanny Vally. Skin this generation has come a long way, eyes next gen, and then maybe the nightmare that is rendering hair the generation after.
  • I dont see the picture above AMUSING I want more from next gen
  • Definitely excited to hear more about that. It should be an exciting year for gaming

  • fingers crossed for good facial hair too

  • We are so damn advanced.
  • That man has no beard. I am not impressed. Give us beards!
