Writers Guild Announces Video Game Nominees

The Writers Guild of America has announced the nominees for its annual awards for video games. As usual, the nominees are an eclectic mix of obvious picks and head-scratching surprises.

To be considered for the award, games must have been released between December 1, 2011, and November 30, 2012, and writers must be members of the guild. Additionally, game scripts have to be submitted. That explains the unusual mix of nominees. Where else would Mortal Kombat's story be held up against Batman: Arkham City and Uncharted 3?

Here are this year's nominees:

007 Legends: Written By Bruce Feirstein; Activision

Assassin’s Creed III: Story By Alex Hutchinson, Corey May, Matt Turner; Multiplayer Story By Richard Farrese, Jeffrey Yohalem; Lead Scriptwriter Corey May; Scriptwriter Nicholas Grimwood, Russell Lees, Matt Turner, Danny Wallace, Ceri Young; Ubisoft

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation: Scriptwriting by Richard Farrese, Jill Murray; Ubisoft

Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two: Writing Consultant Marv Wolfman; Disney Interactive Studios

Halo 4: Narrative Design Christopher Schlerf; Microsoft Studios

Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Written By John Garvin; Sony Computer Entertainment America

Winners will be announced at the Writers Guild Awards ceremony, which is being held this year on February 17 in Los Angeles.

  • No Max Payne 3 love? I mean for God's sake - "I wouldn't know right from wrong if one of them was helping the poor and the other was banging my sister... "
  • Pretty meaningless award.

  • 007 Legends? Really?
  • ...something stinks about this list of nominees.

  • 007 Legends over Max Payne 3? Not sure how that happened...
  • Thank god the world is making since again. What I mean is that AC3's storyline is being recognized as better than Dishonored. I love that game to death but really? You all REALLY thought that Dishonored had the better storyline? PS: For those who hated Connor, I'm sorry the man whose father abandoned him and whose mother burned alive in front of him at the age of five is not cheerful enough for you.
  • Hmm this does seem like an odd assortment of games for this award. Halo 4 should definitely win though.

  • With a list this bad, they may as well have thrown "Journey" in as a contender.

  • AC3 and Halo 4 should be the winners...

  • Ok... besides halo 4, assassins creed, and uncharted what are the rest doing in there. Not that this isnt awesome to see video games reconizied from other types of people but they are judgeing writers for gods sakes. Dont they know what looks good and what dosent. Grantet the has to be losers but reall 007 legends and epic mickey.

  • If anything Halo 4 deserves it. But to truly understand it you must know a lot more about the lore of the game from the books.
  • Seems like some of you didn't even bother to read the article.
  • Out of the available options, I'd give it to Halo 4.  And how is Epic Mickey 2 even an option? No one played it!

  • Assassin's Creed III should win, had one of my favorite stories of the year.
  • Jesus, even here the ACIII credits are really long.
  • There's 007 and not Zero Escape....
  • Ahh most of the writers for the really good games weren't members of the guild. Makes sense. *** THE UNION!

  • Really 007 legends?
