Obama Asks Congress To Fund Study On Game Violence

During a press conference this morning, President Obama called for the legislature to fund a study on the effects of violent video games and other media.

In the conference, which also announced 23 executive orders on gun control, Obama mentioned the proposed study. Later, the wire service Reuters received confirmation from a "senior administration official" that Obama "would be asking for $10 million for the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to study the root causes of gun violence, including any relationship to video games and media images."

This request follows a recent series of meetings that Vice President Joe Biden held with executives and representatives of the game industry in Washington, D.C. last week.

Maybe if they do this themselves, they'll finally stop blaming everything on violent media instead of ignoring everyone else who's done studies and then focus on what actually needs to be done. Maybe.

I hope that was just a move to appease the NRA, not anything that will get anywhere. Although it would prove easier to violate the first amendment for the 2nd amendment loons that to get them to think about how they can contribute to society by looking for solutions rather than acting like the selfish reactionaries they are.

What are they hoping to find? A bunch of old men disconnected from the world of video games and guns. The only possible scenario that could result from these probes is more regulation. You can't stop deranged kids from shooting up schools just like you can't stop terrorists from putting bombs in busy plazas. But you can punish the general populace which has already happened in the name of anti-terrorism. Politicians are a reactionary bunch. You can rest assured that they will take measures to infringe on our freedoms or way of life.

I don't think that violent media can solely lead to the travesties that they are so often accuse of, but I do wonder if they have any influence at all with the right circumstances. It will be interesting to see how this pans out. I'm sure it will turn out to be nothing as has been the case so many, many, many, times before. Most studies before usually don't bode well for these anti-everything people.
