PlayStation 3 Worldwide Sales Eclipse Xbox 360's

While the general perception is that this generation has been "won" by Microsoft -- largely due to the Xbox 360's dominance in North America -- analyst firm IDC's data now shows a slight advantage for Sony's PlayStation 3.

In a new report entitled "Worldwide Video Game and Entertainment Console Hardware and Packaged Software 2012-2016," IDC says that Sony passed Microsoft's worldwide numbers in the recent holiday season. PlayStation 3's worldwide sales numbers now stand at 77 million, compared to Xbox 360's 76 million.

This near dead heat is surprisingly, considering that Sony got a late start in this generation, and has struggled to catch Microsoft in the U.S. and Canada. It's also worth noting that -- despite the previous conventional wisdom -- the video game market in this generation was robust enough to support not one, but three, successful home game consoles (including Nintendo's Wii).

  • I just have to much money invested in my 360 to give it up, but still this is good news for the industry overall.
  • Good for you Sony, now keep releasing those PSOne and PS2 classics!
  • The general perception?  Nintendo and the Wii dominated this generation in hardware sales.  Even in North America it was the number one consoles.

Don't get me wrong, Microsoft made huge in roads this generation and Sony struggled mightily after dominating with the PStwo, but I don't think anyone familiar with the industry ever felt Microsoft "won" this generation.

As you capped it though, important fact is we went from 1980s where one system could stand, to 1990s where only two could and now today three consoles sold very well.  I know there seems to be a great deal of pessimism about consoles right now, but this past generation was very strong.

  • I've been loving mine since I got it.

  • Can't wait for next gen. Never got a ps3 (I have a 360), but I think they are both great consoles.

  • It's nice to know that all 3 major console manufactures were able to put up some impressive numbers. Goes to show that there isn't a recession, depression or inflation that can keep gamers from gaming!

  • I enjoy PS3 the most but all three consoles are good. Free online features and exclusives do factor in my opinion.

  • Go Sony!, I love Sony and Nintendo, never owned an xbox 360 and I have played one, I like the ps3 better over all but some things like the controller on Xbox I like better.

  • Bought mine this holiday for the PS3 exclusives that are coming this year. Microsoft is starting to lack in those heavily...

  • Obviously when I bought my PS3 on December 26th, it changed the face of the war.
  • Not surprising since Sony offered the superior console. Did they give up a year? Yes. But have they sold more in less time? Yes. Let's not forget how inflated Microsoft's numbers for the 360 are due to the RROD and people buying multiple 360s.

Good for Sony. While it may not be to the level of domination of the PS2, it also is on track to do better than the PS2.

PS2 has global sales of 150 million after 12 years. PS3 has global sales of 77 million after 6. For those that don't want to do the math (which would only be 77 * 2), the PS3 would be on track for 154 million after 12 years.
  • I wish I owned all of the consoles, but I'm satisfied with my PS3 because history was kind to the PS1 and PS2.  Also,  Japan's support is a huge deal for me.  Love them Japanese exclusives.

  • Not surprising. The Xbox has been primary popular in North America. Sony has been popular in a more global sense. Xbox really dominates a couple of demographics, while Sony dominates a few and does moderately well in others.

Curious as to which earned this most bank when all is said and done. True, Microsoft had the RRoD that cost a few billion, but they have also had XBL Gold memberships racking up profits for years now. Not only that, but Kinect seems to be largely popular within the more "casual" gamers when compared to the move.

Sony seemed to have trouble out of the starting gate with their ridiculously high entry point, but have had tons of first-party/exclusives to the system over the years (although they seem to sell lackluster in some cases for whatever reason). PS Plus has probably been doing well I'd imagine. Wonder how much damage the whole lulzsec thing did a year or so ago.

Seems both have had their ups and downs. Sony in particular seems to be hitting some rough spots (especially with the under-performing Vita). Still, I don't really have a vested interest either way. I'm certainly no stock holder. Just interesting to see how this generation has been playing between those two (excluding Nintendo because they seem to be too busy rolling in money at the moment).

Oh well. Back to playing Anarchy Reigns and maybe some Don't Starve.

  • Yay, I love my PS3, glad to see others getting to enjoy one.

  • BOOM! Thats how Sony does it! Lol, good job PS3, I will always be with ya.
  • 360 still better no matter what the close minded people say i own both and so much more to do on 360. open your eyes people
  • Just think of how many more they would be ahead if everyone didn't get another 360 because of RRODs.

  • I could of sworn the announcement was concerning shipped consoles not sold consoles.
  • About time, awesome seeing the playstation still getting alot of love.

  • After reading the article and comments, it feels so good to own both Xbox 360 and PS3. I still don't have a WII - U but I might consider it first I am getting a gaming laptop though(I stay on the move I know Desktops are better and cheaper).
