The lights are on
New Wii U owners have most likely gone through the somewhat lengthy process of transferring old Wii content to their new console. While it's more than capable of playing these Virtual Console games through the built-in Wii emulator, gamers aren't able to access their classic games on the GamePad screen alone. According to Nintendo, that will change.
Speaking to a Nintendo rep, Kotaku editor Jason Schreier got the confirmation while researching for a larger editorial piece. "We are moving ahead with development of Virtual Console for Wii U, and we plan to make it so you can play it on the Wii U GamePad alone," said a Nintendo of America rep.
This comes as great news for fans of Nintendo's classics. Your dream of playing Super Mario World, A Link to the Past, and Bomberman '93 on the toilet is one step closer to reality.

Hopefully ninty will have a more successful wii u with a 3ds style ambasidor program and a price drop because it's currently stalled and we're waiting on lego city and the wonderful 101 as reasons to own a wii u and something else to play after mario.
this is wonderful news for me i love my wii u but since i beat scribblenaughts all ive got is mighty switch force HD xenoblade and the last story to play on my wii u when this is released im so going to play link to the past while watching supernatural although i wish they would integrate the nintendo accounts with the 3DS so i can download all my ambassador games onto my wii u so i can play them when i dont want to bust out my 3DS

That was literally one of the top 3 reasons I bought a Wii U.
game at the same time. Silly, i know. But once again Nintendo has given me something I didn't know I wanted in the first place.
LOL.. more work in progress news i'll never buy a WII U. just wait till bayonetta mates with mario.. its over at that point
Hope eventually for them means this sometime this year. Would love to have this feature.
Really looking forward to this. I simply loved being able to play Mario U on my gamepad while I had a movie playing on the TV. Now that I've finished the game and have moved on to some PS3 stuff, I'm disappointed I can't watch a movie and play a game at the same time. Silly, i know. But once again Nintendo has given me something I didn't know I wanted in the first place.
