Shadow Of The Colossus Film Gets A New Writer

Seth Lochhead, writer of the film Hanna, has been tapped to join director Josh Trank in order to write the film adaptation of the PlayStation 2 game, Shadow of the Colossus.

Trank directed the film Chronicle, and was confirmed as the director of the film last year. Neither the writer or director have many credits to their names, but both Chronicle and Hanna were well regarded films.

How do you feel about the adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus? Do you think it has the potential to be as fantastic as the game?

  • I have yet to play this game. I must play this last-gen gem.
  • I really don't think it will match the game in terms of epicness, but that's just me. I'm just uneasy about them making it into a movie...
  • I really liked Hanna, but I'm not so sure how well he would do a film like Shadow of the Colussus. Either way, I hope it happens (rather than being stuck looking for directors like most video game movies).

  • LOL, how is this going to be a movie? There's only three characters for like 95% of the game. One of them is dead, one of them is a disembodied voice and the other one doesn't say anything. Not to mention, what story is there is pretty weird. I don't want to give away the ending for people who haven't seen it, but trust me, some strange, very vague stuff goes down at the end of that game.
  • I could go on for about five minutes about how much I disliked Hanna. I'm not so sure about this...
  • I'm not sure there's enough story material for a movie. Your wife dies, you battle colossi to win back her soul. The writers will have to embellish a LOT to make a full length feature out of this.

  • I haven't seen Hanna, but Chronicle was awesome. Still, I would consider this a tough project as they have to present the themes of the game to a much wider audience. Still, glad to see that some talent has been brought in that have put some quality work before, and not just some hack writer Hopefully, this director isn't like the Donnie Darko director, one good movie and the rest being crap. Good luck to them, and a lot of luck. I won't accept a lot of deviation.
  • If the director can keep that sense of "immersion" and scale then that will be a GREAT start.  Of course it had better be a DAMN good story too.  I doubt they'll have all 20 colossi in the movie, but maybe a montage to quickly show "the rest" and then get to the BOSS.

  • The beauty of this game was greatly due to the silence of the characters. And what little dialogue they had was to help the players, and it wasn't even in english. If they change that, I feel that this story will have less of an impact on the people watching the movie (most of who probably didn't play the game). A lot of video game movies I don't have much of a problem with. But I think that this is a bad idea
  • Videogame movies are never a good idea. Can't think of one that wasn't just terrible or a bore to watch. Honestly, they might ruin something I love, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't try to make it. I wish them good luck and hope they can pull it off =)
  • I hope they don't try to add large amounts of narration to try to appease newcomers. That's not what SotC, or any Team ICO game, for that matter, is about.
  • Of course, because movie adaptations of videogames are always top quality productions.

  • Nice. I never played the games but I really liked Hanna and Chronicle. Maybe if the movie is done well enough to get me interested I'll try the games out.

  • It has to have little to no dialogue and be very silent in its nature with the original soundtrack.

  • One of the best games iv played, so if they do this right, this can be a HIT!

  • whao what, there's a film?! I hope it'll turn out well.

  • I have never played it but I want to. I feel it is the greatest game that I have missed out on.
  • When they cast the boy, I hope they include Isaac Wright from the Game of Thrones show. Bran Stark: http://dontdoubtwhatyouwrite.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/bran-stark-isaac-hempstead-wright-game-of-thrones-0031.jpg
  • Not trying to sound like a ***, but I'm probably the only one who really couldn't get into Shadow of the Colossus. I thought it was decent, mind you I had the HD version with Ico, but it just wasn't as great as everybody made it out to be IN MY OPINION. It was ok, but I thought the controls were a bit too off, and after a few hours of playing I quit. It just seemed floaty, and awkward to control (this is coming from somebody who plays Monster Hunter so I know awkward controls lol) I tried getting back into it time and again for about a week or so, but it just wasn't happening. For some reason I feel like I didn't give it ample time and I will try it again before long I guess. It's just the 1st time playing didn't wow me in any way from a gameplay/story standpoint. Not trying to hate on it as I respect it from the standpoint that quite a few people adore it. I guess I'm going to have to just man up and give it another shot.
