The GamePad Will Be Able To Play Virtual Console Games...Eventually

New Wii U owners have most likely gone through the somewhat lengthy process of transferring old Wii content to their new console. While it's more than capable of playing these Virtual Console games through the built-in Wii emulator, gamers aren't able to access their classic games on the GamePad screen alone. According to Nintendo, that will change.

Speaking to a Nintendo rep, Kotaku editor Jason Schreier got the confirmation while researching for a larger editorial piece. "We are moving ahead with development of Virtual Console for Wii U, and we plan to make it so you can play it on the Wii U GamePad alone," said a Nintendo of America rep.

This comes as great news for fans of Nintendo's classics. Your dream of playing Super Mario World, A Link to the Past, and Bomberman '93 on the toilet is one step closer to reality.

  • Hopefully this will be here by E3.
  • I want a Wii U. And the Steam-Box or Piston or whatever it is called.
  • Really looking forward to this. I simply loved being able to play Mario U on my gamepad while I had a movie playing on the TV. Now that I've finished the game and have moved on to some PS3 stuff, I'm disappointed I can't watch a movie and play a game at the same time. Silly, i know. But once again Nintendo has given me something I didn't know I wanted in the first place.
  • Any word if this will be on the actual Wii U interface, or still on the Wii interface? To me it seems like a no-brainer to just merge the two catalogs and cut out that whole second store.
  • Guess that is good news. The hype around the Wii U seemed to die off very quickly since release. Are people still happy with the purchase?
  • LOL.. more work in progress news i'll never buy a WII U. just wait till bayonetta mates with mario.. its over at that point
  • I find it sad when the worlds most famous video game character is a evil person. Thats right Mario likes to beat his monkey.

Edit: Well in the original Donkey Kong you play as Mario trying to get back your girl friend. But the reason DK steals her is because DK was Mario's pet monkey. And Mario was beating DK until he went on his rampage. So the only reason the game happened was because Mario is a bad man who likes to beat his monkey. And you are playing as the villain the whole time. And more ironically funny then sad . Mind ***.
  • For some reason I didn't think about that. Now that I have, why wasn't it there launch day?! :P
  • This will be cool, I'm sure the games will look sharper on the gamepad, as well.
  • Hope eventually for them means this sometime this year. Would love to have this feature.
  • I don't really care, I usually use the TV Whenever I play the WiiU.
  • my computer screen and a 4 minute download does a great job playing all the retro games.
  • I think not having virtual console on the Wii U was my biggest dissapointment with the system, however, being able to transfer my entire Wii console onto the Wii U made up for it.
  • I'm puzzled as to why Nintendo doesn't just sell a game pad separate of the WiiU that can still work with the WiiU but can store and play Virtual console games anywhere.
  • Hopefully the Virtual Console Update will consist of moving all the VC/WW over to my empty spaces on the Wii U. The 3DS did it with DSiWare, so the Wii U can do it with WiiWare/VC.

  • Wow, looks like I am eating some crow! I bashed the WiiU pretty bad because I was still upset Nintendo left me behind favoring the casual masses. But recently I have gone through some massive Nintendo nostalgia reminiscing. I went out and bought the Deluxe version for one of my son's Christmas presents. I have to say I am very impressed. Never played NSMB and I have to say it's very good. The U version is right up there with Super Mario World! Really looking forward to Super Mario 3D U, Metroid U and of course Zelda U. I even went out and bought Metroid Other M and Zelda Skyward Sword as I missed them because I sold my Wii a long time ago. This system is going to be just fine. I will still play any multiplatform games on my beloved PS3 though. One thing I thought Nintendo dropped the ball on was the NSMBU MP not working with the Game Pad. I had to buy 2 WiiMotes to play MP which is sad. I am hoping this fantastic news in regards to Virtual Console games working on the Game Pad also points to a future where Wii games will also work on the Game Pad. I cannot imagine playing Metroid Other M and Skyward Sword while the TV is being used by my family.
  • Also, I hope Nintendo releases a new Game Pad with Wifi. That would truly be a massive perk for the WiiU.
  • Nice, but they should have tied accounts together across 3DS and Wii U, and eventually allowed you to use vurtual console games across both. I suppose it's still an option, but they really should have had this organized by now. As critical as I am of the Vita, having my PSN account tied to it and the PS3 with trophy support was a stroke of genius.
  • I want this function now. I love that I can switch over to the Netflix on the XBox while I play games on the Pad. Being able to play all my Virtual Console games on the Pad would be awesome.
  • I really want one of these.
