Firefly MMO Creators Respond To Accusations Of Fraud

After yesterday's news of the Firefly MMO receiving "well wishes" from Fox Entertainment, accusations of fraud began to appear online. DarkCryo, the developer behind the game, had received endorsements from the Yes Men, a group well known for creating fake media in the interest of raising social and political awareness. Because of that relationship, a few blogs began to call out the project to be fake.

On the Facebook page for the game, DarkCryo offered this statement:

Firefly had its Blue Hands, FUO has its Yes Men.

DarkCryo has received a myriad of endorsement proposals with the idea of featuring such celebrities with ingame cameos. Much as Circa Paleo will be performing throughout the fringes of the FUO Universe, the Yes Men elite NPCs will be sabotaging Megacorp faction PCs whom are guilty of monopolizing ingame commerce.

In a user-generated environment, balance is everything. Every faction requires a creative boss to which we can relate, and the Yes Men were gracious enough to allow us the integration of their identities into gameplay.

What you are reading on a 3rd party forum is a single over-zealous Reporter that writes impulsively, unfortunately such activity inevitably places the reputation of the reporting site in grave jeopardy.

That being said, we prefer to let the article stand for two reasons. Firstly endorsement is a two way street, and we are more than happy to return the favour of publicity back to the Yes Men who have taken the leap of faith to endorse DarkCryo. Secondly, and more importantly, such articles redirect the undesirable demographic away from FUO to titles more befitting their personalities, and whose colourful tact is more appreciated by a like-minded gaming audience.

To further clarify what exactly is happening with this project, DarkCryo also posted this statement:

After numerous telephone conversations, both the Executive and Legal Staff of 20th Century Fox have given DarkCryo Entertainment their well wishes for an inspired - not endorsed - title at this juncture.

There is a huge distinction between the two regarding derivative works, and we are continuously working with the senior counsel of 20th to ensure their property remain protected.

DarkCryo also posted a screenshot from the game, which you can see above. You can head to the DarkCryo website for more information.

  • Firefly? Like Serenity?
  • Good thing there's nothing confusing about all that.
  • Good to no its not faked, even though I didn't have doubts.

  • Hmm...

  • Nobody called them blue hands...
  • Well now that that's all cleared up, I have just one last question: What?

  • I really hope it's not fake.

  • I'm confused now...

  • So... correct me if anything is wrong here. It's a Firefly MMO... but it's not Firefly... but it's called Firefly Universe Online... but it's not officially endorsed by the people who own the rights to Firefly... but they're not totally against it, either? This relationship they have with Sony seems tentative at best. Something tells me legal trouble is brewing in the wings of this story.
  • I'm kinda...confused. oh wells,

  • This just makes me look forward to this more and save up some money for a kickstarter

  • I'm gonna go make pancakes in the middle of a busy intersection because that would make more sense than this article.
  • After reading that, EULAs make a lot more sense to me.

  • This reads like it was plugged into Google Translate, then dragged through several languages before being plunked back into English. Seriously, what did I just read?
  • Eh? Also, of you can't fly a firefly class ship then I don't care.

  • Funny how people seem to have a hard time understanding this.

Basically, all anyone should care about is this... A fan made MMO based off Firefly is being made. It is real and is not a scam to get peoples money and run with it. 20th Century FOX will not take legal action against them or request them to take it down. They are not officially endorsing or backing the project, but they are not trying to stop it either.

(Looking at you Nintendo and your treatment of the numerous fan made Pokemon MMOs that spring up and get snuffed out)
  • So, Firefly right.  talk about a good show.  Shame about that ending to Serenity.  What was this article about?

  • Mmmmm.  Well I'm sure Fox would be speaking out if they never gave them their 'well wishes'.

  • So convoluted that it doesn't sound like it'll actually make it to alpha testing.  Plus it doesn't really sound like Fox has signed off on this, and so unless they're planning on just giving this game away chances are this means trouble.  If they do indeed make it to the point where they're going to sell the game Fox will probably crush them with weight of thousands of corporate lawyers.
