Valve's Rumored Console May Be Linux-Based

Rumors of a Valve console have been circulating for quite some time, and here's some more difficult to confirm information to add to the fire.

Valve's man in charge Gabe Newell has offered a few quotes in regard to the success of Steam's Big Picture Mode and bringing the PC into the living room that strongly hint that a Valve console is in the company's future. In typical Valve fashion, however, it's all very ambiguous and secretive.

A NeoGAF user has posted a link and translations from German website Golem.de where Valve employee Ben Krasnow spoke at a conference in December about a Valve console. Apparently it will be based in Linux rather than Windows in the interest of delivering an open platform for developers. Also, Newell doesn't care for Windows 8. Krasnow also said that Valve will reveal more about the hypothetical console this year.

  • Interesting choice, but open source I suppose.

  • It was never going to be able to be Windows based. Why would Microsoft provide software to them to use in a competing console? That would be like having the PS4 running on Windows.
  • OpenGl
  • Very interesting, I love that a linux based console would give a very open creative entrance into the console. The only thing is that I'm on of the few whom actually dislike big picture on the pc but i would love to see it in a console. Hopefully more info rises in E3.
  • Valve is one of my favorite developers and publishers-I've love to see this happen, and I trust them to make a console.

  • Sweet, its going to be pretty good. I think it will have a big chance in the run for best console.

  • Odd, I read that they already announced the "Steambox". Anyways, I like that it will be Linux base, more memory saved, and it's the best with customization and software. Anyways, I agree with Gabe about Windows 8, but some stuff he says makes me really mad, like saying something and then denying and it such.. And I am still mad at Steam for not fixing a bug that Uninstalls the game and the backup when you uninstall its tool, which only the tool should uninstall. Lost 10 or more hours of Skyrim mod preparation, and over 200 hours of creating mods, the backup as I said was removed, and that is supposed to stay even if you uninstall Skyrim or the CK.

I stick to my PC mostly anyways, but too many Developers only use Windows, and very few of those use Mac, so I wonder how that will go.
  • this is old news....
  • It will be based on linux.... duh. Why would they make it windows based?

  • I thought this had already been confirmed, then unconfirmed, and reconfirmed again?

    My head hurts.

  • if this is true, then microsoft, sony, and nintendo will be in huge trouble
  • How can you tell if an engineer uses Linux?

Don't worry. They'll let you know.

  • I swear if this is true...

  • I'm not very enthusiastic, I see no reason to buy Linux if you don't already have it (which I don't).
  • I can see this working out.

  • Either way gonna be an awesome E3, if there is a valve console im hoping for Half Life 3 to come with it. Seems like a good marketing strategy to me and i think a good console could easily content with the next Xbox and Playstation consoles which will most likely come out either this year or next.

  • No thanks. Linux sucks monkey balls
  • Interdasting.
  • rumored?  it is a fact.  gabe even said so at the VGA's.  where were you guys?

  • The fabled "Valve Steambox" is something that has been a rumor for so long that I don't particularly expect it to be true.  And even if it is, I don't expect to see it any time soon, especially given Valve's history of delaying games even longer than Nintendo does.

If it exists, I'd peg it for 2014 at the soonest.  A Linux-based console sounds like a good idea, if for not other reason, to further mix up an industry that needs more than just Nintendo throwing wrenches in the gears.
