Sony Patents Anti-Piracy RFID Tech

We’re not new to the war on piracy and used games, but it appears Sony is taking a new step for prevention.

A Neogaf user found a patent application for an “Electronic Content Processing System.”  Just what would this system do? It would tie game discs to specific user accounts and/or consoles. An RFID tag on any given disc would be read by the console to determine if the game had been used before on another console and/or account and would block you from playing it.

Obviously, this is an issue for those who buy used games and/or share them between friends and family. It seems that Sony is trying to cut back on piracy with the PlayStation 4 on the horizon. Still, the filing of a patent is not necessarily an indication that the technology will actually be used. Sony owns many other anti-piracy patents, like USPTO #6,782,477, which have never been used.

  • sony....stahp.

  • I would like to think they wouldn't be that stupid, because that's basically handing over the next console gen victory to Microsoft. The largest base of consumers will no longer buy a console they can't get games for at Game Stop, since trading stuff in and buying used has become such a big thing.

  • I don't buy used games...never have, never will...if I want it then I do my research and find out whether or not it'll be worth my $60...I don't blame SONY for wanting people to buy their product at full price, instead of waiting a year to buy a recycled copy while the new ones rot on the shelves...I would do the same and so will everyone that's trying to get a profit on their product...this changes nothing for me...I do feel bad for GameStop and GameFly and the huge amount of gamer's that rely on used games to feed their hobby...but can't really hate on SONY for thinking about ways of increasing their profit on software...
  • I don't pirate games what so ever but if Sony or any other company does something this stupid well then I'll see y'all out on the high seas.

  • F**k you, Sony, if you do this. That's so f**ked up. Like evil.

  • Maybe they're just getting a patent on this so no one else does. This way Sony can sit on the patent not letting anyone use this terrible idea.

  • Sony's becoming Big Brother here.

  • Sure this will likely make new game sales go up, but DLC purchases will go down. I have no idea what portion of a game's revenue comes from DLC, but it must be significant since most games have it nowadays.

That said, I think everyone should be buying new games. If you like a product, you should be supporting the people who made it with your purchase, not an unaffiliated company like GameStop. GameStop won't be developing any new games for you to play.
  • Sorry guys. Sourcefed beat ya to informing me.

  • Who was it that said that whichever console manufacturer to announce blocked used games would be handing the next generation to the competition? Sony can NOT be happy that this was noticed. XD

  • Making my decision to switch primarily to PC seem like a really good decision. At least I'll enjoy your PS3 exclusives while they last, Sony.

  • If they ever implement this system, then I will no longer buy their Playstations. Simple as that. If Microsoft and Sony try to implement systems like this into their next game systems then Nintendo will win another console generation hands down.

  • I am a playstation fanboy since the PSX. If Sony decides to use this, I will forever disown them. Same for Xbox. I'll just switch to PC.

  • Thanks Sony, for making my decision on what next gen system to buy first a little easier.

    Sony PS4 - Nope
    MS Xbox 8 - Maybe
    Steambox - Maybe
    PC Upgrade - Probably
  • THIS ISN'T GONNA HAPPEN SONY WON"T DO THIS

  • Sony adds another nail to it's coffin by pissing off consumer in over to stop the few pirating from them.

  • Yay, we're gonna get free games! If Sony plans on using this I think they could get hacked again.

  • Sony, really? Making the consoles loose the backwards compatibility and now this? It's a bit odd considering how terrible their recent sales have been. This is going to help them.
  • I agree with this if and only if games start on PSN at $30 or less. If not Sony is going to die fast.
