Pinball Machine Makes Modern Art

An art student recently put a pinball machine to work making modern art. If cats can do it, why not pinball machines. Jackson Pollock eat your heart out.

Graphic designer and art student Sam van Doorn put together an art installation built around a pinball machine for his graduation project. The installation is called STYN.

"In a time of digitalization of the work proces, you can easily forget the freedom and fun of play," Van Doorn wrote on his blog. "By creating new tools, you give yourself the opportunity to break free from standards in design. As result of this idea I deconstructed a pinball machine an reconstructed it as a design tool."

For more information about STYN, to buys posters created by the machine, or for information on playing STYN yourself, check out Van Doorn's Facebook page. Check out more pinball created art below.

  • I'm going to do the same thing with a foosball table. Then I'll switch it up and do air hockey.
  • Now we just need a pinball wizard to paint the Mona Lisa with it.
  • That's ****ing amazing.

  • Art. That is art.

  • That's really cool! I wish they would make a digital pinball table that would do this on a screen, then let you buy it if it's cool.
  • That's cool!
  • THAT IS FREAKING AMAZING!

  • This is art and video games aren't?

Side note:  I hate modern art.

  • Could you do it on a hockey court.
  • Woah. That's incredible!

  • This is pretty cool.

  • Im sorry but it just looks like a bunch of paint splatters. HOW IS THIS CONSIDER ART? Im very curious.
  • It's neat that someone thought to do this, but I find this more of a design than art.

  • i feel this is a bored kid not art.  its a simple configuration, if it was set up to design an image that reflects his personality then it would be more impressive...

  • Modern are is ***... hmmm what if I take a photo of a dump...? nah it would never work. Or would it?
  • wow.

  • Awesome.

  • YOUR SO UGLY YOU COULD BE A MODERN ART MASTERPIECE
  • As a student of the Alberta College of Art + Design in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, I would like to state that this leans more toward art that design in terms of what purpose it serves. It's something that can be experienced and digested, and it doesn't serve a direct function to do more than be what it is once removed from the pinball machine. The design aspect is what went into making the pinball table to make the works of art. Art and how successful it is, like beauty, is determined by the individual. Personally, I think these are lovely and refreshing. The fact that he didn't just make the works himself, but made the tool he designed (a pinball table) to create them an instillation piece for others to experience, is anything but short of amazing. I think he could push this idea and it's concept even further, possibly into the digital realm. How cool would it be to see this concept applied to something like a Foosball or Air Hockey table, maybe even boardgames. What about an endless platforming game that traced your run each time you played it, and overlapped each run to make a completely unique tapestry of your experience? I dig it, good on him. I'm inspired.
  • I suppose it's easier than covering yourself in paint and rolling around on a canvas.
