Star Wars: The Old Republic Gets Same Sex Romance And More

BioWare recently made Star Wars: The Old Republic free-to-play, but the company isn't done with the MMO. The game will soon be getting new operations, flashpoints, difficulty modes, player-versus-player areas, and same sex sex.

In a recent blog post executive producer Jeff Hickman said that The Old Republic is as healthy as ever and continues to gain new players. Hickman also said that players should look forward to a couple of upcoming updates.

"In our Game Update 1.7 you should look forward to some interesting changes to a special PvP area that you have all been asking about (sorry for being cryptic, but this is technically not announced yet), as well as a visit from some old friends, The Gree Enclave (though maybe not in a way you would expect). And later in the spring, our Digital Expansion: Rise of the Hutt Cartel! The team has been working for a long time on this, and is very excited to get it out to you. We have greatly expanded on the original concept with several new systems, 5 new levels, a big new planet, new storylines, new skills and abilities and more beyond that. Keep your eyes open for more information over the next several months."

On the topic of same sex relationships, Hickman said, "I realize that we promised SGR to you guys and that many of you believed that this would be with a companion character. Unfortunately, this will take a lot more work than we realized at the time and it (like some other pieces of content we talked about earlier in the year) has been delayed as we focused on the changes required to take the game Free-to-Play. As we have said in the past, allowing same gender romance is something we are very supportive of."

On the other hand, players will be able to initiate same sex relationships with NPCs on the planet Makeb after the next content update.

  • That's um... very... Bioware-like to do this.
  • Well that's pretty g*y.
  • And when will it come to other platforms?
  • Cue flame wars about ethics of homosexuality...
  • I don't see how this is even important. I doubt people are going to start playing a game simply because it has "SGR."
  • What does makeb mean?
  • In all honesty I'm not really surprised by this. I wonder if a News channel will make a big deal about it though.
  • Im more surprised the game didn't launch with this. Bioware has this in any game because in RPGs you role play. Duh. So normally you play as yourself, sexual preferences and all.

  • Bi-oWare.
  • Because sex is SO important in video games. Much more important than giving you more than one voice option for your trooper, or including a simple, free quick travel option, or balancing critical path length vs. leveling options.

Besides, this won't stop with same-gender sex. Star Wars has a whole bunch of sentient species that aren't human. I want wookie-on-Jawa sex as an option, Bioware, or I'll consider myself insulted and disenfranchised!

Honestly I wish Bioware would stop with the sex options in their games altogether. They always implement it so poorly. By all means let romance and attachments grow, but stop with the awkward cinematics of poorly-rendered game-engine characters getting PG-13. Does anyone really like those?
  • umm...I kinda knew that the game was going down hill but... :0

  • CONTROVERSY!

  • whoop dee doo.... I think I've reached a point where same sex sex isn't a big deal anymore. It shouldn't be a headliner.
  • It's not a bioware game anymore until they shove politics into it..
  • *facepalm*

  • No.

  • That's awesome! You guys shouldn't make such a big deal of it though. It's a feature in an update with far more important additions.

  • There were love scenes in this game in the first place? huh...
  • Cool. Now you may want to start working on the rest of the game. The entire gaming community seems to give this game a resounding "meh." That's not good reception for one of the most expensive games of all time.
  • I don't have the time for MMO's anymore, I play Guild Wars 2 on rare occasion and that's about it.
