Footage From Primal Rage Sequel Rises From Fossil Bed

Atari's Primal Rage was one of many "me too!" fighting games that followed the success of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat. The 1994 arcade game featured dinosaurs battling other prehistoric beasts, including a giant yeti who had a thing for peeing on his opponents. A sequel was in the works at one point, but it was canceled. Atari did manufacture a handful of test cabinets for the game before pulling the plug on the project, and now you can see gameplay footage from one of them.

YouTube user Raydude uploaded the clip, which shows more than four minutes of gameplay. It's definitely crude looking by today's standards, but its jerky animations would have looked poor even in the mid-'90s. It's still fun to see things like this unearthed and dusted off, especially if you don't have to pay $.50 for the privilege.

  • I think I like the thought of Primal Rage more than I liked the game... A fighting game with dinosaurs sounds like a great idea until it's executed. Jurassic Park: Warpath...all I gotta say. Even so, it is a shame to see any game reach the completed state and not make it to consumers, regardless of how awful they may be, someone had to put the work into it.
  • Lol, I faintly recall such a game...

  • i remember playing primal rage, but the finishing moves were hard to pull off...vertigo was my favorite character...and eating your fans, who were color-coordinated with you was laughable but didn't really see the point back then...
  • Primal Rage was so much fun. Mortal Kombat, but with dinosaurs and monsters instead of ninjas. What's not to love? Although this sequel seems to star people and not dinosaurs.... maybe thats why it got canned. Also, the animations don't seem bad at all....
  • This game looks like a cross between Primal Rage and WeaponLord. I remember those games, they were not so famous like Street Fighter 2 or the sequels but they were a lot of fun along with the Mortal Combats and Killer Instinct. They need to tap into this market area, the nostalgic older gamer. THey should do games like those ^_^
  • Man, I loved Primal Rage. Talon was my favorite.

  • I remember this game at the arcade, I think I played it once or twice as it was quite boring. Especially with Street Fighter 2, Tekken and Samurai Showdown standing next to it.

  • I loved the toys and comics of this series as a kid.  Primal Dino and Ape gods battling it amongst one another?  I'm sold.

  • Is it me or is Primal Rage 2 missing Dinosaurs
  • Looks like a generic 2D fighter from that era, but come on Atari.  You should have made Primal Rage awesome.

  • Primal Rage may have been another "me too" fighter game, but the dinosaurs are why we played. Excluding them in the sequel was a terrible idea. I guess this is one sequel I won't miss.

  • Looks like they took away Primal Rage's gimmick (dinosaurs and prehistoric beasts) in favor of some generic barbarians as characters. This one probably deserves to remain buried. Too bad stuff like the Atari Jaguar got released.
  • nice LOL i still have primal rage in it's box for the amiga... pretty fun game, i remember thinking the graphics looked incredible as a kid

  • These animations actually would not have looked jerky "even for the mid-90's." Given that the animation appears to be based around stop-motion (claymation a la Clayfighter, and the original Primal Rage), it looks pretty good--and is a far cry smoother than the animation seen in any version of Street Fighter II at that time.

What is puzzling is the obviously massive change in direction--the giant dinosaurs and apes have been replaced by boring human-like gods. The animal fighters was the thing that really set Primal Rage apart from the other fighters, though granted, the entire roster was a satire of Mortal Kombat.

It is interesting to see that they were developing a much more complex combo system, however.
  • Guys here is the the story. The humans were avatars of the dino gods. When you did.. something your human would turn into the dino god. Jus to set that stragiht, as I researhed this. By the way, Dino Crisis 2 had a really fun two Player dino fighter as a bonus. The controls could have be more fighting game esque tough. We need more dinosaurs in gaming.
  • "I'm trying to put coins in."
  • **BRAAAHHHH**!  This actually looks pretty rad

  • This was always the first game I ran to in the arcade to waste my few precious quarters that my mom gave me.. This and Xmen

  • That looks awful. Primal Rage was such a disappointment, yet I rented it over and over again.
  • The visuals do not look that bad. Dino's vs Yetis, heck yeah.
