Rumor: Ubisoft Interested In THQ Assets

THQ is publicly on the trading block, and word is that Ubisoft is interesting in picking up the company's key assets for a price.

MCV says that it's been told by sources that Ubisoft is in talks to acquire the THQ assets (the U.S.-based studios and the games they are working on) that Clearlake Capital Group recently put in a stalking horse bid for when THQ filed for bankruptcy.

MCV's sources say that while Ubisoft is in "lengthy discussions" for THQ's assets, it would rather wait and pick up specific properties if THQ were ever in a position to sell them for cheap.

In November, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated that Ubisoft would be interested in acquiring THQ properties if THQ was ever to fall into trouble – like they are now.

Getting series like Saints Row (pictured), WWE, Darksiders, and Homefront could certainly be good for Ubisoft. The games of foreign-based THQ studios, like the project headed by former Ubisoft creative director Patrice Désilets (Assassin's Creed franchise) are not included in THQ's recent offering.

  • That works.

  • I would actually be fine with that, other than their spotty PC support, I like Ubisoft. This still makes me sad about the THQ situation.

  • I would love to see what Ubisoft does with Homefront if they did buy it out.

  • Ubi would be good. They have the money to spend. But I would like to see a partner in the industry for THQ instead of them going away.
  • I'd say Ubisoft is pretty versatile when it comes to releasing unique high-profile games, so to pick up those series from THQ seems like a natural transition.
  • Yeah, no. I dislike DRM, Dayone DLC, and milking of franchises. Please no Ubi.
  • Hmm... interesting
  • I hope Square Enix picks up Saints Row actually, I've been very impressed with all the titles they've released and games upcoming: Hitman Absolution and the Tomb Raider reboot. And I think Square Enix could stick true with Saints Row
  • I have this fear Ubisoft will be first party-exclusive in the future...
  • Better them then EA or Activision.
  • I wonder if Nintendo has any interest in them? Acquiring the THQ assests would instantly give them a number of possible exclusive games for the Wii U.

I think it could really broaden out the Wii U's potential library of games in many different genres.
  • Better Ubisoft then EA i guess. Bioware used to be one of those developers where I could rely completely on them to make a game that I would love. Then EA bought them... 3 in a half games later the doctors are gone, and I just can't expect new Bioware games to be top-tier. I want Take-Two to get THQ over all others companies. Pretty much ALL of my favorite games seem to have the 2k or Rockstar stamp on it.
  • I mean... YES!!!

  • Please, Ubisoft! Fix Saints Row, and make it more like SR2!!! I don't want that level of crazy, I just want a good game.
  • I would much, much rather see Take-Two/2K get the rights (of course they wouldn't touch Saint's Row).
  • Ubisoft would be great for this especially if they could keep the Darksiders team together.

  • Ubisoft can get Darksiders and Homefront. I don't see them with WWE, that's Activison's business.
  • YES! Please more Darksiders!
  • A Darksider's game with a bit of Prince of Persia added to it would be nice. Moreover, if they improved Saint's Row to look and feel like Watchdogs... Look out.
