Star Wars: The Old Republic's First Expansion

BioWare and Electronic Arts have announced the first expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic, and introduces the Hutts, a new planet, a new level cap, and more.

The Rise of the Hutt Cartel comes out in spring 2013, and will cost $9.99 for subscribers and be $19.99 for everyone else. Either way, if you pre-order the title by January 7 you can get five days early access.

The expansion features new story-based missions on a planet called Makeb, and the five new levels will raise the level cap to 55. New abilities, gear, and skill points will also be available as you progress.

Further details are light right now, but BioWare says that the planet holds a big secret that the Republic and Sith factions will want to get their hands on.

  • Expansion ? It's PC. I don't even like this game...
  • I've been playing this lately. Having fun with BioWare's storytelling even if the scope of the game allows you to see the chinks in their interaction design's armor. I enjoy it for what it is, have payed a little money in to support the people who made it. Not sure if I'm willing to pay $20 for one planet though. I'm already thoroughly against their subscription... although if they cut it in half price wise I and a lot of other people would probably bite. If that planet is gonna get me through all five levels at that point then perhaps, because it would have to be giant, but I don't know.

  • it should be free for subscribers since they spent so much money and now it went F2P
  • This seems like a giant waste of time. After all that has gone on with this game over the past year. How do they think they are going to drum up business or keep players when they have still not taken care of the large number of end game issues and continuing class issues. This is so just an EA cash grab. Shame.
  • I for one love this game, and I'm glad to see they're getting an expansion out already. The F2P model has some kinks to work out, but in terms of content they've been pushing out quite a bit the last few months.

  • Hmmmm...interesting. Might have to check it out.

  • It doesn't really sound like a very large expansion.................
  • Fun game might be worth a look!

  • I do really like this game and I don't usually enjoy the MMO's and maybe I'm one of the few who does enjoy it but I'm a F2P and the subscriber specific bonuses almost make me want to pay but not unless they lower the price. I'm not sure if I can pay 20 dollars for a planet though...

  • I used to burn this game up, and now I don't know if I'm going to come back to this or start up a WoW account. I'm a huge fan of MMO's.
  • they can bring in the hutts, hec they can bring in kermit the frog.. the game still sucks.. it will never EVER be better than Star Wars Galaxies.. the mmo's have failed.. make that annoucement SOE save me from my pain! SWG II SWG II SWG II SWG II Bioware you failed one this one... may SWG rest in peace for it was the greatest Star wars MMO of ALL TIME!>. thats right i said it.. now what!.
  • Calling this an expansion is laughable.

  • $20 for non subscribers? Are you serious? $15 would be much more reasonable. EA being EA -_-
  • Charging so much money for microtransactions, and now $20 for a single planet . . . they're really burning up a lot of the cred they earned for going FTP. I mean yes, you can play the game without paying anything. But it's a horrendously obnoxious experience unless you pay at least $5 for preferred status, then about $15 or more for things like extra slots for items, crew skills, the ability to quick-travel, or the use of a speeder. As a new player once they went FTP, I'm enjoying the game so far. But I'm annoyed *almost* as often as I'm pleased. I'd rather have 2/3rds of a game that's fun to play, than a full game that makes me spend half my time running, only lets me claim half the level rewards, get half the experience, etc. Besides, I know this is going to go on sale for $4.99 in a few months, when no one buys it. So I can wait until then.
  • It's what this game needs, I was bored at 50 when I played; the gameplay up to 50 is engaging and worth a look for those interested.

  • Sounds nice, problem is there's STILL no Mac version...
