Reader Discussion: The Holiday Lull

It's Tuesday, which normally means that we get tons of new releases – except it's also a Tuesday in December. Every year, the closing weeks of this month dry up in terms of big-name titles, and the trend continues into early January. Do you welcome this breathing room in your busy gaming schedule?

Even though the list of new releases is sparse, people are still playing plenty of games. How do you use this annual lull? Do you catch up on your backlog? Play various DLC packs? Avoid gaming altogether to focus on family? Or do you just sit there impatiently twiddling your thumbs and waiting for mid-January when new games start releasing again?

  • I have way too many games to beat...
  • I have such an enormous backlog that I will take any lull I can get. I've almost caught up on PS3, but I'm just really starting on PC. Maybe by the time the next generation of consoles rolls around I'll be all caught up. One can only dream...
  • I'm waiting for the Steam winter sale and hoping that it will have Skyrim at a nice discount.
  • Yes, perfect time to catch up on everything and most stores have big sales on games after Christmas.

  • I usually finish my backlog of games after I finish delivering gifts to all the good people. HO! HO! HO!
  • I play all the games possible to try to catch up. Not possible.

  • I have a major backlog of PC games to finish...I'm hoping to do some of them, and continue with my NG+ in Xenoblade.

  • I catch up on my backlog. Still have to beat Arkham Asylum.

  • The twiddle the thumbs part, theres some PS3 games I could get around to but dont feel like it, and only 1 or 2 360 games I still plan on playing but havent... /bored.

  • I always stock up on new games every Black Friday so that I have plenty to play over winter break.

  • The most recent game I own is Black Ops 2. I am itching for a refreshment, as fun as Black Ops 2 is.
  • I'll never catch up on my PS3 backlog.

  • I have games in my "vault" here I haven't even began yet, and some I've never finished so I'm looking forward to getting some time to clean up the backlog. I also have a whole bunch of Borderlands 2 + DLC to get me by. And if I somehow magically finish all that, I've got some leveling up to do in Halo 4 multiplayer. Bring on the lull!

  • I've been busy with Don't Starve (which you should totally get because it comes with an extra copy) and XCOM. I still play my games. Same with all my hobbies. I don't stop just because of the holidays, with the exception of Christmas. I usually have to travel between VA and TN for around 5-7 different get together. Exhausting as hell, but plenty of food and gifts.
  • Well I am still enjoying Skyrim's infinite replay value, but I think I'm ready for some GTA V.
  • I think I'm going to give gaming a rest over the holiday break and read the Mass Effect series.

  • Oh yes!!  I have a few games I need to beat before February!  Thank you lull!

  • Catching up, playing anything I might have skipped out on, before getting back up titles at Christmas and going to town on those.

  • In the last month I've picked up 8 games that I haven't been able to even start yet. Parents will be in Paris for Christmas this year so I don't have to fly all the way back home. I should have a good chuck of time to actually catch up for once.

  • Well right now I've take a break from gaming but I'll be on break form this Saturday to the 22nd of January. So I'm sure I'll fit in plenty of gaming like I usually would.
