NeoGeo X Gold Releases This Week

by Andrew Reiner on Dec 17, 2012 at 04:40 AM

If you scoff at the idea of paying $60 for a game today, be thankful you didn't own a NeoGeo system in the early '90s. NeoGeo games retailed for $200 and up. This console was initially designed to be used in hotels and bars, but consumer interest led to it being sold in stores. The system launched in 1991 for $649.99, and despite the steep entry price point, found moderate success and lived on for years as a premium product for gamers. It was the console every gamer wanted, but few actually owned.

That can change this week. Tommo and SNK Playmore are celebrating NeoGeo's 20th anniversary with the release of Neo Geo X Gold, a limited edition replica console that comes packaged with an arcade stick and the new NeoGeo X Handheld. This console can be played on the go, or through the TV. Unlike its '90s predecessor, the NeoGeo X Gold Limited Edition retails for a reasonable $199.99.

The list of games preloaded on the handheld:

  • 3 Count Bout
  • Art of Fighting
  • Alpha Mission II
  • Baseball Stars II
  • Cyber Lip
  • Fatal Fury
  • Fatal Fury Special
  • The King of Fighters '95
  • King of the Monsters
  • Last Resort
  • League Bowling
  • Magician Lord
  • Metal Slug
  • Mutation Nation
  • Nam 1975
  • Puzzled
  • Real Bout: Fatal Fury Special
  • Samurai Shodown II
  • Super Sidekicks
  • World Heroes Perfect

The Limited Edition also comes packaged with a Ninja Master's NeoGeo X game card. More games will be released for the system in 2013 and beyond.
